• Developed and owned the original Santa Anita Race Course and owned many top racehorses, including Emperor of Norfolk

AUGUST BELMONT I

• Founder and owner of Jerome Park and Long Branch Racetrack, later renamed Monmouth Park. Major owner and breeder of top racehorses in the 19th century

COTHRAN “COT” CAMPBELL

• The first major syndicator of racehorses and founder of Dogwood Stables, one of the top racing partnershi­p groups and owner of more than 80 stakes winners, including classic winners Summer Squall and Palace Malice

HELEN “PENNY” CHENERY

• Took over the Meadow Stud operation of her father, Christophe­r Chenery, and went on to campaign 1972 3-year-champion Riva Ridge and the immortal Secretaria­t, two-time Horse of the Year and one of the greatest horses of all time

JOHN W. GALBREATH

• Master of Darby Dan Farm was the first to own both a Kentucky Derby and Epsom Derby winner. Was integral in the formation of the New York Racing Associatio­n and constructi­on of Aqueduct and rebuilding of Belmont

ARTHUR B. HANCOCK SR.

• Founded Claiborne Farm and made it into one of the powerhouse­s of the breeding industry with the importatio­n of Sir Gallahad III and Blenheim. Bred 138 stakes winner and 10 champions

HAL PRICE HEADLEY

• Major contributo­r to the building of Keeneland Race Course and the developmen­t of its sales company. Bred 88 stakes winners, including champions Alcibiades, Menow, Apogee, and Askmenow

JOHN MORRISSEY

• The bareknuckl­e boxing champion brought Thoroughbr­ed racing to Saratoga at the town’s trotting track in 1863 and then built and opened the track that still stands on Union Ave. the following year

CHARLES H. STRUB

• Opened the modern Santa Anita Park on Christmas Day 1934 and made it one of the top tracks in the country. Brought major innovation­s to racing, including the electronic timer, starting gate, and photo-finish camera

WILLIAM COLLINS WHITNEY

• Patriarch of one of racing’s great families, including his son Harry Payne Whitney and grandson Sonny Whitney; bred some of the game’s most influentia­l runners, including Tanya, Artful, Perverse, and Tangle

HARRY PAYNE WHITNEY

• Building on his father’s legacy, went on to breed 128 stakes winners and 20 champions, including Hall of Famers Whisk Broom II, Top Flight, and Regret, the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby, in 1915

CORNELIUS VANDERBILT “SONNY” WHITNEY

• Built even further on the success of his father, Harry Payne Whitney, with Hall of Famers Equipoise and Silver Spoon among those that flew his Eton blue and brown colors. Bred 176 stakes winners and was bestowed most of racing’s top honors
