Warranty looking to rebound

- By Randy Goulding

Warranty will try to get back on track when she runs in a first-level allowance race with a $25,000 claiming option at Gulfstream Park West on Sunday. The 7 1/2-furlong turf race for fillies and mares drew 11 horses and appears to be a wide-open event.

Warranty was coming off a layoff and was making her first start for trainer Mike Maker when she finished last in a second-level allowance race with a $62,500 claiming option on the inner turf course at Belmont on Sept. 29. She may not have cared for the yielding turf, and she was facing a tough field. The winner, Dolce Lili, and runner-up, Complicit, both finished second in their next start and received 90 and 86 Beyer Speed Figures.

Warranty won back-to-back races for trainer Chad Brown last winter at Gulfstream Park, and her second win was in a first-level allowance race with a $35,000 claiming option on Jan. 21. Her next start came in the $100,000 Ginger Punch on June 16, and she finished fourth in her only start for trainer Lisa Lewis

She could take a big step forward in her second start for Maker and will appreciate being back on what should be firm turf. There also appears to be enough speed to set up her good late move.

Warranty will break from post 4 with Paco Lopez aboard.

One Direction Song could move forward after finishing third as the lukewarm favorite at this level on the Gulfstream turf course on Sept. 27.

The David Kassen-trained 4-year-old set the pace in that 1 1/16-mile race. She is versatile, however, and in her previous start she came from a stalking position to win going 7 1/2 furlongs in a first-level allowance race for Florida-breds with a $16,000 claiming option on Aug. 12.

KEY CONTENDERS

Warranty, by Artie Schiller Last 3 Beyers: 58-74-81

◗ She was on a roll last winter, and it is easy to toss out her race at Belmont, where she may have been compromised by the soft turf.

One Direction Song, by Flower Alley Last 3 Beyers: 73-75-61

That was a good effort coming off a layoff and she figures to move forward with a race behind her.

Proud O’Paddy, by Paddy O’Prado Last 3 Beyers: 75-74-73

◗ The consistent 3-year-old filly trained by Jane Cibelli is coming off back-to-back runnerup finishes in first-level allowance races at Laurel, and the two times she finished worse than third in nine starts, she had compromised trips.

Money Factor, by The Factor Last 3 Beyers: 74-73-58

◗ Trained by Joseph Catanese, she romped by 5 1/2 lengths going 7 1/2 furlongs in a $30,000 conditioned claimer at Gulfstream, and came back with another strong race when she rallied to finish second in the same race that One Direction Song exits.
