Adore looks to keep rolling in She’s All In

- By Mary Rampellini

Adore will be looking for her fifth consecutive win Sunday when she takes on shipper Shenandoah Queen and the sharp 3-year-olds Cosmic Burst and Rose of Malibu in the $100,000 She’s All In at Remington Park.

The She’s All In – at a mile and 70 yards for fillies and mares – is one of six stakes on the closing-day card, led by the $400,000 Springboard Mile. It also serves as the first leg of the late pick four, which will have a minimum guaranteed pool of $100,000. The 50-cent bet runs on races 9-12.

Adore is having her best year at the age of 5. She launched her streak in an off-the-turf allowance May 5 at Lone Star Park. Adore then won the $75,000 Spotted Horse on the Evangeline Downs main track June 22 before racking up back-to-back stakes wins at Remington, and victories in an allowance Aug. 31, and the $75,000 Ricks Memorial in her most recent start Sept. 30.

“Obviously, we’re lucky to have a quality mare like her still in training,” said Steve Asmussen, who had a 42-win lead in the Remington trainer standings into Friday. “She’s had some good success this year, and hopefully it continues.”

Ricardo Santana Jr. has the mount for Winchell Thoroughbreds.

Shenandoah Queen is moving back to two turns off a fourthplace finish in the Grade 2 Chilukki on Nov. 3 at Churchill Downs. The last time she raced at two turns she won her second straight Tranquility Lake Stakes at Del Mar. Shenandoah Queen, 6, is making her first start for new owner Gainesway Farm and trainer Brad Cox.

“Ultimately, she’ll be bred when breeding season starts,” Cox said.

Cosmic Burst and Rose of Malibu finished first and second in the $250,000 Zia Park Oaks Nov. 21.

Trapeze Stakes

The Trapeze, which is for 2-year-old fillies at a mile, is the second leg of the late pick four. Asmussen will send out Merada, Backflash, and debut winner Bella Alicita.

Merada could go favored off back-to-back mile wins at Remington, in a maiden special weight Oct. 27 and an entrylevel allowance Nov. 20. Ricardo Santana Jr. has the mount from post 6 for owners Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt.

“I think she’s very versatile,” Asmussen said. “She’s really a pretty mare, great attitude and goes well.”

The most accomplished starter in the field is Cowgirls Like Us, a stakes winner at one turn and at two. Iram Diego has the mount for trainer Bret Calhoun.

Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial

The Springboard Mile is the third leg of the late pick four while the $75,000 Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial will close out both the sequence and the meet. The mile and 70-yard race for 3-year-olds and up is a tough read due to the presence of Grade 3 winners Harlan Punch, Hence, and Shotgun Kowboy.

Dazzling Gem adds further depth to the field. He was second by a head in this race a year ago, closing with good energy against a wire-to-wire winner. He enters this year’s running off a third-place finish in a sprint allowance Sept. 27 at Churchill.

“He’s in form,” Cox said. “He’s going to have to get a good trip. It’s a very solid race. He has experience at Remington, which is a plus.”

Hence won the $175,000 Governor’s Cup at Remington in September, and finished fourth in the Grade 2 Fayette at Keeneland and fifth in the Grade 1 Clark at Churchill in his last two starts. His last six starts have come at 1 1/8 miles.

“I’m concerned that it’s a little short for him,” Asmussen said of the Hawk Memorial. “It’s where we’re at on the calendar for him. Hot Springs is next and the timing between the Clark last out and early races in Hot Springs, it falls on the calendar nicely.”

◗ Sydney Freeman will be looking for her second stakes win of the meet when she returns to the Oklahoma-bred ranks for the $70,000 Useeit. The mile race is for 3-year-old fillies. Sydney Freeman was third in the $250,000 Zia Park Oaks in her last start Nov. 21 and before that she defeated older rivals in the $145,000 Oklahoma Classics Distaff. Ramon Vazquez has the mount for trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

◗ Shannon C will shake off Welder when he gets back to racing with straight 3-year-olds in the $70,000 Jim Thorpe, a mile race for Oklahoma-breds. Shannon C is making his twoturn debut off two runner-up finishes to Welder, a candidate for horse of the meet, in recent stakes at Remington. Floyd Wethey Jr. has the mount on Shannon C for trainer Scott Young. He is a son of the multiple stakes-winning mare Miranda Diane.

◗ Remington plans for a statue of millionaire Clever Trevor to be dedicated Sunday. The bronze image by artist Lisa Perry will be located in the paddock area. The threequarter-scale statue was modeled after Clever Trevor’s win in the inaugural Oklahoma Derby in 1989. Don Pettinger was aboard for the late Don McNeill and trainer Donnie Von Hemel.

◗ David Cabrera led the Remington rider standings and Danny Caldwell the owner standings into the final week of the meet.
