HORSES TO WATCH

- – Brad Free

AN OCALA TEN

Trainer: Rosemary Trela Last race: Aug. 14, 7th Finish: 1st by 2 3/4 Beyer: 80

Low-level claiming sprinter set pace inside, took heat, widened, sharp win. Claimed by Trela from Peter Miller, front-runner can fire right back, possibly at Los Alamitos.

MISS TOKYO

Trainer: Richard Baltas Last race: Aug. 15, 4th Finish: 5th by 3 1/2 Beyer: 66

Cold on board (7-2 program, off at 6-1), first-time starter was off step slowly in turf sprint, recovered to chase from third, evenly. Ran as if she needed a start, follow next time out.

SHEAR CLASS

Trainer: John Shirreffs Last race: Aug. 16, 6th Finish: 3rd by 2 1/4 Beyer: 84

Debut filly by Curlin was devoid of speed in maiden dirt sprint, raced far back, leveled off in lane, and finished strongly. Solid debut, promising 3-year-old filly eventually will want two turns.

HONOR A. P.

Trainer: John Shirreffs Last race: Aug. 17, 6th Finish: 2nd by 2 1/2 Beyer: 77

This 2-year-old colt is a good one. Lacked speed in maiden sprint, not asked, picked up steam through turn and into lane, big finish. Well-bred, top prospect, bred to run long.

CONTE CAVOUR

Trainer: Javier Sierra Last race: Aug. 18, 6th Finish: 3rd by 5 Beyer: 51

Longshot second-time starter in sprint for older Calbred maidens steadied at the start, trailed by a long way, finished willingly in sneaky effort. Needs a clean takeoff.

BODHICITTA

Trainer: Richard Baltas Last race: Aug. 18, 9th Finish: 4th by 1/2 Beyer: 72

Maiden turf filly is due for some luck. Had tough trip in U.S. debut July 28, then left with too much to do second out, rallied late, sub-23 final quarter, huge finish. Next time.
