How to play

- By Kenny Peck

LEG A (BEL 6th): MATZO BELLA just missed under these same conditions two back, coming up a head short with a strong late rally. She’ll be looking to make the last run here but there’s plenty of speed to set her up. QUEENDOM is another who figures to benefit from the expected race flow; she makes her turf debut but that barn excels under these circumstances. ANDARTA is one of the expected speeds; perhaps she’s quick enough to shake loose (3).

LEG B (MTH 7th): Tough race for the 2nd leg of this sequence, as this Maiden Special Weight turf event is obviously wide open, with the majority of the field either firsters or horses with one career start. Obviously, this is a good race in which to spread, and rather than cut out a handful of runners I’ll use them all and hope for something wild (9).

LEG C (WO 7th): Another puzzler, a two-turn race for maidens with several stretch-outs and surface switchers. With a wide net cast in Leg B this one needs to be whittled down to some degree. I’ll use BREED’S HILL, DISCLOSURE, MINE THAT STAR, CADET CONNELLY, FINAL RHAPSODY and NEW DEAL (6).

LEG D (BEL 8th): UNCLE BENNY was hurt by a stumbling start in his return from the layoff, not only because he lost position but also because he was left with too much to do in a race that lacked a clear pace scenario; obviously dangerous with a clean getaway. ELEKTRONIC was off the board in that same race but his chances were also compromised by the race flow. CHILLY IN CHARGE is widest for his turf debut but he has tactical speed and his trainer does well with turf sprinters, two strong indicators for success under these conditions (3).

LEG E (BEL 9th): Ending with a single in GOLDEN SPEAR, who comes off a win against similar, complete with a competitive Beyer. He scored there from off the pace despite mild early splits and he figures to get an even better set up in this final leg. If that’s the case he has room to take a step forward in terms of his figures, and given that scenario he’ll be tough to stave off (1).

THE PLAY: 3, 4, 7 / ALL / 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11 / 2, 6, 10 / 2 = 486 Combinations ($243 Ticket)
