How to play

- By Kenny Peck

RACE 7: Last time out, BURNIN’ POCKETS was re-claimed by these connections, who lost him through the claim box two back. He rises as he eyes his third straight but fits well based on his figures. His main rival, Zicatela, comes off a solid Beyer but it seems like a good spot to take a shot against that runner, who has benefited from the race flow in his last two starts and now goes longer (1).

RACE 8: PARCAM COWGIRL, 2nd in this race last year, has speed but can also rate, and that should mean she’s able to work out a trip regardless of how the race flow develops. SMART FIX is widest but she’s clearly the one to beat on the strength of her Beyers, which are easily the best figures in the field (2).

RACE 9: SHIMSHINE is surely going to be a handful today if he is able to run to his last couple of Beyers. In his latest, he benefited from the pace scenario, which favored closers thanks to the presence of several speeds and a quick early pace, but his prior figures certainly suggest that the 67 Beyer he posted there is hardly a fluke. REGAL MAX has enough speed to stay close from the start, and that’s an edge if the fractions are controlled, or on the mild side (2).

RACE 10: DURA’S HALO drops in class and should be in position to pick up the pieces late, as a quick, contested pace does seem likely to develop here. MR. IRRELEVANT is another who stands to benefit from the expected race flow, as there is plenty of speed in this field to set up a closer (2).
