Multirace wagers spice card

- By Steve Andersen

The first focus for jackpot bettors at Los Alamitos on Friday night will be the $1 early pick four, a popular bet that had a record handle of $454,040 on Sunday.

Later on the eight-race program, the $2 pick six begins in the third race with a carryover of $18,560 from Sunday. The pool of new money is likely to exceed $75,000.

Neither the early pick four nor the pick six will be easy.

First post time is 9 p.m. Eastern, or 6 p.m. Pacific. Wagering is available through DRFBets. com.

The early pick four consists of two sprints for Thoroughbreds at 4 1/2 furlongs followed by allowance races for Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds at 1,000 yards and 870 yards.

The final three races on the program are maiden special weight races for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at 300 yards. They seem especially tricky, with fields of 9, 7, and 9 runners.

The 1,000-yard distance of the third race should benefit Tromador, a Thoroughbred trained at Santa Anita by Ryan Hanson. He was second by a neck in an allowance race at 870 yards at Los Alamitos on April 11, and second by 2 1/2 lengths as the 7-10 favorite in a similar race at 1,000 yards on April 24.

The maiden special weight races for Quarter Horses have a mix of first-time starters and runners who started in maiden races in recent weeks.

The first-time starters Favorite Folly and Swingin Mr Cartel, both by top stallion Favorite Cartel, are from leading stables and have worked well in recent weeks. Favorite Folly was purchased for $40,000 at the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale last October.

Your Painted Fate, trained by Mike Robbins, was last of seven in a maiden special weight race on April 25, breaking from the inside and then lugging toward the rail at the start. Your Painted Fate has drawn post 4 on Friday.

In the seventh race, for fillies, Favorite Role is likely to lead the betting after a decent third in a similar race on April 18 in which she veered to the inside at the start. The firsttime starters Favorble and Sweetie Cartel have attractive workouts. They are by Favorite Cartel.

The final race may be the most open of the maiden races. Echoes of Thunder, fourth in a highly regarded race on April 18, drew the outside post against four first-time starters by Favorite Cartel – the colt Favorite Colossus, the filly Mysterious Identity, and the geldings Alltime Favorite and El Cuervo Favorito.
