FIFTH RACE

-

Runner-up both previous starts at this $25k claiming N2L class level, while finishing far clear of third in both, CAMBY gets the call over high-figure SKY JUMPER. This is the first start in three months for CAMBY, whose trainer Mark Glatt was on fire reopening week. The gelding has speed to set or press the pace. However, if SKY JUMPER reproduces the 91 Beyer he earned last out, this race is history. But that was a two-turn starter allowance, which is a far cry from this five and a half-furlong dash. SKY JUMPER has fast works, an up-front style, and could go favored. BABY GRONK drops in for a tag and returns to his preferred sprint distance. He fits on numbers. CRYIN’ CHUCK trounced maiden-20s with a pressing trip from the outside. He figures for a similar trip here, pressing the pace from the outside.

SIXTH RACE

This N1X turf mile is a split of race 8. GO DADDY GO found a mile and a quarter out of reach last time out in his first against winners; he finished sixth at 13-1. But if he reproduces his maiden win two back at this one-mile trip, he can spring an upset. The lightly raced son of Scat Daddy won that mile maiden race with a sharp 23.29 final quarter-mile. He has tactical speed, a finishing kick at this distance, and could start at a generous price in a wide-open race. Tab for a mild “upset.” AVALANCHE ran very well in his comeback, rallying from last to miss by less than two lengths with a final quarter in :23.03. That was his first start in more than a year, the trouble-prone late-runner will be flying in the lane. RED KING won at this condition a year ago when he entered for the optional claiming tag, but he has been stuck the level since. He finished in the money four of his last five N1X starts, and is probably good for a share.

SEVENTH RACE

Peter Miller-trained first-time starter PRESS BRIEFING and Miller-trained comeback dropper MOST SANDISFACTORY rate top billing in this maiden-40 sprint. Either can win, the work pattern of PRESS BRIEFING suggests he is well-meant. By aboveaverage debut stallion Khozan (18 percent winners first out), the gelding’s once-a-week work pattern includes three recent gate drills. Multiple gate drills are not necessarily a good thing, but Miller can get older first-timers ready to roll. If not, then MOST SANDISFACTORY can win his first start since September. In the money all three starts last year vs. special-weight maidens in Kentucky, he drops in for a tag for his first start of the year. DA KINE also drops in for a tag, goes route to sprint, and turf to dirt. Bullet workout on the training track last weekend suggests he is ready to fire.

EIGHTH RACE

This N1X turf mile is a split of race 6. MADMAN will be tough to beat if he reproduces his last-start runner-up finish under similar conditions. That was a narrow loss in January, in his first try on turf and first around two turns. He ran his final quarter-mile in a respectable :23.61, and missed by a nose. The race was validated when the third-, eighth- and ninth-place finishers returned to win. BORDER TOWN has improved each successive start, culminating in a decisive maiden victory last out at a mile and one-eighth. His two previous starts at this mile distance were solid; he will be running late. IRISH HEATWAVE is one of a pair of three-time winners in this lineup. He retains firstcondition eligibility because two of his wins were state-bred races. He returns to California after a runner-up finish in a N2X at Fair Grounds.

NINTH RACE

First-time starter CLAYTON DELANEY is well regarded; he was nominated to the $150k Echo Eddie Stakes last Saturday. He skipped that race, worked a sharp five furlongs nd from the gate a day later, and makes his debut as the top choice in this Calbred maiden race. A sibling to stakes winner Ruby Bradley (now $12.5k claiming filly in the second race), CLAYTON DELANEY is trained by Phil D’Amato and will be ridden by leading jockey Flavien Prat. All systems go, first time out. BRACE FOR IMPACT is best of the experienced runners. He ran well both previous sprints on this track, runner-up both starts while open lengths clear of third in each. ‘IMPACT has speed, solid works, and should come back firing returning to dirt and shortening to a sprint. First-time starter BETITO is a full brother to stakes-placed filly Hotitude, a runner-up at long odds in her debut. Kristin Mulhall trains BETITO, who appears to have worked well. CAERULEAN can improve from his fourth-place debut; EL DIABLO ROJO finished in the money both previous dirt sprints. Upset candidate?
