BEST BET: RACE 6, NO GETTING OVER ME

FIRST RACE

Another 4-day week at Gulfstream ends with a 10-race Sunday card that’ll have an empty Rainbow 6 (races 5-10) jackpot following the Saturday forceout. The long-range forecast calls for mid80s highs and the possibility of thundershowers, but we’ll hope it stays dry enough for all turf racing to stay ON (all selections here are for turf ON). Looking for the drop to $16k to be enough to make SUNDAY SCHEMING a winner in the noon ET opener; her lone grass attempt for Wesley was pretty solid. BEE WINGS can loom the main threat, assuming careful early rating from Paco (who, it must be said, has a whole lot of live mounts today); her DNF from Fla. Derby week a likely aberration. TOKYO can save all the ground when perhaps appreciating the class drop.

SECOND RACE

A couple of young fillies who flashed foot at first asking will lock horns here, with MISSING LINK perhaps rating the edge out of her late-April debut. She’ll try speeding clear of first-timers such as HIDDEN DREAMS and the other filly with one forward outing, SAY CHEESE, a cleverly named miss in perpetual search of a win photo; be interesting to see how the wagering goes down here.

THIRD RACE

Extremely aggressive move by Maker & Co. when jamming CAPE TRIOS in for this $12.5k tag. Red flags pop up, sure, in view of the 5-plus-month layoff combined with the plunge, but her kind of speed is always dangerous; trainer always has his poker-face on, doesn’t he? FIBER OPTIC, another last-out Maker claim, can end an exacta sweep for the stable; mare seems to have finally found her niche going one turn on the GP lawn, regardless of who’s training her. NOT NICE, favorably drawn in the outer box, stands to benefit from her Memorial Day return.

FOURTH RACE

With Chad having culled a fraction of his stable while transitioning back to NY, the private purchase of horses such as SUPERHIGHWAY figure to occasionally pop up here at GP; this one seems strategically spotted for the oddball $14k tag in his first try for Frank and Saffie; runner-up effort off the 11-month layoff points him out. WOODHAVEN KID adds blinkers when also dropping down for the trainer (P.Reynolds) who brought Big Brown around; another live one for Paco. VOICESINTHEDARKNEZ was an okay 2nd for $10k after being switched into the B.Lynch barn.

FIFTH RACE

Slim pickins in this opening leg to the brand-new Rainbow 6. Looks like PREACHER MARSEE would very much appreciate getting back to the grass after floundering as the 8-5 favorite in that 4/30 off-turf route; well-bred colt was pretty competitive at similar levels when on his preferred surface; there’s that Paco guy again. HERO UP tends to flash dangerous speed on the grass; gray dude can take them deep here. YOUSHOULDBESOLUCKY was a decent 2nd in a 12-horse field at this same level last out.

SIXTH RACE

Ambitiously spotted during the winter in Tampa stakes such as the Sam F. Davis, NO GETTING OVER ME now assumes more modest aims after moving into the Saffie barn; the May 22 start can serve an extremely useful purpose toward this 2nd try vs. state-breds, especially on the subtle turnback to one turn; call him the day’s best. ROMAN EMPIRE actually finished ahead of the top pick in the key 5/22 race; Mathis homebred should make it thru this condition before too long. GRAY BEAU can be along for a share.
