BEST BET: RACE 9, TOOTHLESS WONDER

FIRST RACE

OUR ROMANCE drops to the maiden-20 bottom for the first time in the 11th start of her career, while stretching back to two turns. Her figures top the field, her best races have been routes (albeit on turf). AWESOME DRIVE also enters with a shot while dropping in class. As a 3-year-old, ‘DRIVE gets a minor weight break (four pounds); her last three starts were the best of her eight-start career. GOLDEN MELODIE looms an upset candidate, first time around two turns with speed for a pressing trip outside the top choice. RATIONAL is likely to improve second time out.

SECOND RACE

In the money all five starts, MOST SANDISFACTORY drops his lowest level (maiden-30) and adds blinkers while shortening to a sprint and returning to dirt. Fastest in the field, logical favorite. FIFTYFIVE CHEVY makes his debut with a series of fast works including at Dixie Downs in Utah. Maidens trained by Luis Mendez tend to fire first out. Most of his debut runners are 2yos; Mendez is 0-for-2 with older firsters. Nonetheless, ‘CHEVY looks ready to fire. First-time starter FIGHT ME also appears to have trained okay, while PRESS BRIEFING and MOBJACK face easier. First-time starter CHASE CHEETO debuts for a Northern California stable that does well with first-time starters at a price: 7-for-51 the past five years with non-favorite debut runners. ‘CHEETO scratched from a $8k maiden-claiming race two weeks ago at Golden Gate to enter this instead.

THIRD RACE

Based on his third-place debut last summer behind subsequent graded winner Collusion Illusion, DISCO BALL gets the call to win his comeback. He set a strong pace last summer and missed by a half-length. He posted one work afterward, then was sidelined. His comeback work pattern is solid, maidens trained by Brian Koriner generally fire first following layoffs.
