Oak Hill finishes up strongly

- By Marcus Hersh

OAK HILL

July 18, 5th race, Saratoga, MdSpWt72k

Beyer: 87

1M, turf 1:27.62, 1st by 2 lengths ch. c. 3, Distorted Humor–Tabarin, by El Prado Noteworthy siblings: Abraham (Distorted Humor) – stakes winner, $733K earnings

Auctions: Keeneland Septempber yearling 2018

– $65,000

Owner: Dixiana Farm

Trainer: Al Stall

Breeder: Dixiana Farm and Distorted Humor Synd. Solid second turf-sprinting in career debut and stepped forward with nice Beyer in two-turn maiden win at the Spa. Was allowed to lead on a slow pace, but while that helped him in this particular race, being a rateable front-runner generally is an asset, and he came home in 23.50 for the final quarter-mile, turning away a challenge at the eighth pole. Stronglooking

chestnut resides in a barn that often plays the long game, and he did not exactly look honed to 100 percent peak fitness, suggesting there could be more to come this summer.

COWBOY DIPLOMACY

July 18, 7th race, Ellis Park, MdSpWt37k

Beyer: 90

6f, dirt, 1:09.47, 1st by 4 1/2 lengths ch. c. 4, Tapizar–Drumette, by Henny Hughes Noteworthy siblings: Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) – champion, BC Distaff winner, Ky. Oaks winner; Mr. Monomoy (Palace Malice) – G2 Risen Star Auctions: Fasig-Tipton October yearling 2017 – $175,000

Owners: Pocket Aces Racing and Madaket Stables Trainer: Brad Cox

Breeder: FPF LLC and Highfield

We’re not huge on 4-year-old maiden winners in this space, but when the Beyer hits 90 and the horse in question is a full brother to a champion – Monomoy Girl, in this case – we can make an exception. Made three starts – solid, unspectacular – at Oaklawn late winter and early spring 2019, but this was a new and improved model, hitting a Beyer top by 11 points in his first race after a 15-month layoff. Kept up nicely with the pace and took command of this Ellis sprint with a fifth furlong in 11.95 seconds. Hit the wire strong, but the jockey appeared to be under strict instructions to shut him down with no real gallop-out, presumably to avoid overexertion first time back. Should be able to route, and if able to put some racing together again now, could easily be a third stakes winner for this dam.

DREAMING OF DREW

July 18, 3rd race, Woodbine, MdSpWt103k

Beyer: 81

5 1/2f, Tapeta, 1:03.58, 1st by 6 lengths ch. f. 2, Speightster–Dreaming of Liz, by El Prado

Noteworthy siblings: None

Auctions: Fasig-Tipton summer yearling 2019 – $95,000 RNA

Owner: Hoolie Racing Stable

Trainer: Barbara Minshall

Breeder: WinStar Farm

Fourth foal to race from the winner of the 2007 Arlington-Washington Lassie, Dreaming of Liz, whose dam, Silver Maiden, won the Grade 1 Frizette, so this family develops early. You can see it with this filly, a second-time starter and a very big girl (thought she was a colt watching the replay before I’d identified her sex). Had to be ridden along starting at about the half-mile pole, and this was far from one of those “in the bridle, sure winner all the way” performances, but more than anything she appeared still to be green. Slow to change leads, finally doing so past the eighth pole and surging clear once she did with a big gallop-out way in front of the pack. Very much an above-average showing.

REDEEM EDDIE

July 18, 5th race, Delaware, MdSpWt40k Beyer: 83

5 1/2f, dirt, 1:03.21, 1st by 5 1/4 lengths b. c. 3., Redeemed–She’s Achance (American Chance)

Noteworthy siblings: She’s Achance Too (Redeemed) – $227K earnings; He’s Achance (Cactus Ridge) – $190K earnings

Auctions: Fasig-Tipton October yearling 2018 – $60,000

Owner: Joseph Besecker and Imaginary Stables Trainer: Andrew Simoff

Breeder: Joan Everett and Dale Everett

There was an odds-on favorite in this short-field maiden special weight dash, but this first-time starter, debuting in blinkers and a shadow roll, jumped right to the front and never really was threatened. Got some scope to go with this speed and should fit well in the Maryland-bred ranks once he gets around to racing at Laurel.

CAPITAL STRUCTURE

July 17, 6th race, Monmouth, MdSpWt45k

Beyer: 82

1 1/16M, turf, 1:41.15, 1st by 2 lengths ch. f. 3., Lope de Vega–Moi Meme, by Teofilo Noteworthy siblings: None

Auctions: Tattersalls October yearling 2018 – $267,000

Owner: Klaravich Stable

Trainer: Chad Brown

Breeder: Fortescue Bloodstock

Somehow 6-1 making first career start for Chad Brown and Klaravich Stables. One question comes right to mind – why did high-profile connections not debut her at Saratoga? Perhaps she exceeded expectations. Was overeager during both the early and middle stages, and perhaps because of it, she was given her head early, before the three-eighths pole. Turned in a solid run to the wire and was far the best, though you’d not call her a beautiful mover.
