Raymundos Secret eyeing Goldikova after Mabee win

- By Steve Andersen

DEL MAR, Calif. – Raymundos Secret won the Grade 2 John Mabee Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf Saturday at Del Mar by a rapidly diminishing neck, holding off a furious rally from Lady Prancealot.

The outcome has dictated how the 4-year-old Raymundos Secret will be campaigned this fall. On Sunday, trainer Phil D’Amato said one-mile turf races for fillies and mares such as the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita and the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes on Nov. 29 at Del Mar are goals.

“That would be the most logical,” D’Amato said of the Goldikova. “It gives her nice spacing between this race and the next. If she showed continued improvement, the Matriarch is a race that we can jump into.

“I think her confidence level is headed in the right direction.”

The Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles for fillies and mares on Sept. 26 at Santa Anita has an enticing purse of $300,000, but may not suit Raymundos Secret.

“I don’t know if I want to go that far with her,” D’Amato said.

Owned by the partnership of Sterling Racing and Sierra Racing, Raymundos Secret has won 5 of 7 starts and earned $188,971. The $151,500 John Mabee Stakes was her first stakes win and the longest win of her brief career. She joined D’Amato’s stable earlier this year, having previously been trained by Richard Baltas. Raymundos Secret won her debut for D’Amato in an allowance race with a $62,500 claiming option at a mile on turf Aug. 14 at Del Mar.

Raymundos Secret was ridden by Flavien Prat, who won his 13th stakes of the summer meeting, tying Rafael Bejarano’s record set in 2012. Prat rode a record 14th stakes winner Sunday on Madone in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies.

Raymundos Secret led throughout the Mabee, holding a two-length advantage with a furlong remaining.

Lady Prancealot is likely to start in the Rodeo Drive, trainer Richard Baltas said Sunday. The winner of the Rodeo Drive receives a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

Collusion Illusion back to work

Collusion Illusion, who earned a fees-paid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint with a win in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes on Aug. 1, worked five furlongs in 1:00.40 on Sunday at Del Mar for an expected start in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship on Sept. 27.

The $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship is run at six furlongs.

A winner of 5 of 6 starts, Collusion Illusion had the fourth-fastest of 40 works at five furlongs on Sunday.

“He’s a good work horse,” trainer Mark Glatt said. “He worked very solid.”

Owned by the partnership of Dan Agnew, Rodney Orr, Jerry Schneider, and John Xitco, the 3-year-old Collusion Illusion has earned $398,571. In the sixfurlong Bing Crosby, Collusion Illusion closed from seventh in a field of eight to win by a nose in his stakes debut against older horses.

Collusion Illusion has won three stakes, all in sprints.

Harvest Moon to Zenyatta

Harvest Moon won her stakes debut in the Grade 3 Torrey Pines for 3-year-old fillies on Aug. 22 at Del Mar and may race against the leading older fillies and mares in California later this month.

Trainer Simon Callaghan said recently that Harvest Moon is under consideration for the Grade 2 Zenyatta Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on Sept. 25 at Santa Anita. The winner receives a feespaid berth to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 7 at Keeneland.

“If we’re going to run her again this year, it will be in that, if her next couple of works go okay,” Callaghan said. “If not, we’ll give her a little time and bring her back for the 4-yearold stakes” in 2021.

Owned by Alice Bamford and Michael Tabor, Harvest Moon has won 3 of 4 starts and earned $120,720. Her career began in June with a runner-up finish in an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option on turf. Harvest Moon is unbeaten in three starts on dirt.
