Triple Crown trail to local stakes

- By Nicole Russo

The Meadowlands-at-Monmouth meet, which saw its Monday card canceled by heavy rains and strong winds, picks back up on Wednesday with midweek stakes action in the $100,000 Jersey Shore Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters.

As Seen On Tv, who made an appearance on the Triple Crown trail earlier this season for locally based trainer Kelly Breen, gets class relief and cuts back in distance as he pairs up with another local in jockey Joe Bravo. As Seen On Tv made all three starts of his 2-yearold campaign at this sixfurlong distance, winning twice, including a Floridabred stakes. He was second in the Smoke Glacken at Monmouth to Meru, whom he faces again on Wednesday.

As Seen On Tv started this year in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes at a mile, beaten a head by Chance It after a prolonged duel. As Seen On Tv earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98, the top number in this field. But adding more distance, the colt was third in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, then eighth in the Grade 1 Florida Derby. He got a break after the Florida Derby, and made his first start in more than four months in the Pegasus going 1 1/16 miles at Monmouth on Aug. 15, finishing eighth.

Premier Star is getting class relief for trainer Michael Trombetta and local leading rider Paco Lopez. After winning three of his first five starts, he was most recently third in the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga, beaten four lengths by unbeaten Yaupon, a leading candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The Amsterdam runner-up was Grade 1 winner Basin.

Premier Star earned a career-best Beyer of 91 in the Amsterdam. He is one of three in this field to break the 90 threshold, joining As Seen On Tv and Meru, who ran a 95 winning the Smoke Glacken.

Trombetta will also send out Newstome, who won stakes sprinting on dirt at Laurel last year, as well as on synthetic surfaces at Woodbine and Presque Isle Downs. Bright Dawn won a stakes at Charles Town this year against statebreds, while Carey Times and Gandy Dancing are last-out allowance winners.

Completing the field are He’s Smokin Now, who won a stakes at Canterbury; stakes-placed Johnny Ritt; and Win Ya Win.
