Gargan weighing his options

- By David Grening

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Based on her dominant debut win Jan. 2, Breakfastatbonnies would be a strong favorite in Friday’s first-level allowance feature for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

However, trainer Danny Gargan said Wednesday that he would prefer to run Breakfastatbonnies farther than six furlongs and is strongly considering scratching to await a similar spot going a mile next Saturday.

“I’m 90 percent going to scratch her because I want to run her longer,” Gargan said. “If I run Breakfastatbonnies, I think she’ll win. I think she’s got a lot of talent. She’s the best young horse I train.”

If Gargan does scratch Breakfastatbonnies, he would still be represented by My Alluring Lady, who is coming off a maiden victory going six furlongs Jan. 24.

While My Alluring Lady would be in with a chance, the horse she would have to beat is Pleasure Luck, who makes her second try in this condition for trainer Mark Hennig.

“If Mark’s horse wasn’t in there, I think My Alluring Lady would win the race,” Gargan said.

Pleasure Luck came off a six-month layoff to win a New York-bred maiden race by 7 1/4 lengths on Dec. 19. The second-, third-, and fifth-place finishers from that race have since come back to win, including Destinationwnrscir, who won a maiden race by 9 1/2 lengths last Saturday with a career-best 69 Beyer Speed Figure.

Pleasure Luck was off following her debut last June until her second start in December because of an ankle chip that needed to be removed, Hennig said.

Following her maiden victory, Pleasure Luck finished second to Make Mischief in a first-level allowance race going seven furlongs while nearly five lengths clear of the third-place finisher. Make Mischief came back to win the Maddie May Stakes for New York-breds before finishing fifth in last weekend’s Busher Invitational.

Hennig said he also would prefer to run his filly farther than six furlongs, but is happy to have the opportunity to run the daughter of Carpe Diem.

Owing to a lack of speed in her last race, Pleasure Luck was a bit closer to the pace than Hennig would have liked.

“She didn’t get the setup. I think in this race there’s a lot of speed, which should give her a chance to run the way she would probably prefer to run,” Hennig said.

Pleasure Luck gets Lasix for the first time and will be ridden by Dylan Davis.

Out First, a daughter of Outwork trained by Jim Ryerson, shortens up to the distance of her maiden win here in the slop on Dec. 5. She finished a well-beaten fourth in the same allowance in which Pleasure Luck was second.

Out First gets Lasix for the first time and has the outside post under Trevor McCarthy.

Irish Constitution, Bustinmygroove, and the Mitch Friedman-trained entry of Cara’s Dreamer and Chasing Cara complete the field.
