How to play

- By Kenny Peck

RACE 7:

Using all 12 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, which features a deep field, including a full complement of European runners that are more than capable. In a race that could come down to trips and race flow the best move may well be to cast as wide a net as possible (12).

RACE 8:

Hard to recall a horse in recent years who has turned in more eye-catching, gritty performances in one season than JACKIE’S WARRIOR has this year. He’s not only won four of five starts this year but he won the Jerkens two back in as game a fashion as could be, his win in the Pat Day Mile was incredible, and even in his lone loss he was sensational in defeat. He’ll be a short price but certainly doesn’t appear to be a situation in which to take a shot against the favorite, as he seems to hold all the aces in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (1).

RACE 9:

SPACE BLUES has some imposing Timeform figures and comes into the Breeders’ Cup Mile off a two-race win streak. He goes longer but should appreciate the added distance, and if he gets a clean trip and an honest pace, courtesy of Blowout and Smooth Like Strait, he should be in position to run them all down late (1).

RACE 10:

PRIVATE MISSION has speed and the rail but she can also rate, which could mean she’s ideally spotted just off the speeds, including favorite LETRUSKA; if the latter is softened up in the opening stages perhaps Private Mission can pull off the upset. Letruska is the reigning leader of the division and likely Eclipse winner, regardless of the outcome of this Breeders’ Cup Distaff; there is other speed in here, which could make her vulnerable, but she remains the one to beat (2).

RACE 11:

DOMESTIC SPENDING has never run a bad race and his last few Beyers before the break were the best of his career; he’s never been this far but there’s no reason to think he won’t handle 1 1/2 miles. SISFAHAN is the top pick based on his consistency and experience at this distance; he makes his third start off the layoff in the Breeders’ Cup Turf and could be set for a step forward off a couple of improved efforts off the break. YIBIR was an easy winner in his U. S. debut; he meets better here but he should get a faster pace to chase than he did in the Jockey Club Derby (3).

RACE 12:

TRIPOLI was off the board in the Awesome Again Stakes but he chased loose leader Medina Spirit on a track that was kind to speed; should be in line to take full advantage of a contentious pace in this Classic. ESSENTIAL QUALITY is of course another who stands to benefit from a lively pace up front; away since August but by all accounts training extremely well for this (2). THE PLAY: ALL / 2 / 3 / 1, 6 / 3, 9, 10 / 1, 4 = $144 Ticket
