Moira finalist in two categories
Queen’s Plate winner Moira and the recently retired Lady Speightspeare are finalists in multiple categories in the 2022 Sovereign Award voting for Canadian champion honors, announced by the Jockey Club of Canada on Thursday.
Moira, who won both the Plate and Woodbine Oaks decisively, is a finalist for champion 3-year-old filly, along with Sister Seagull and Souper Hoity Toity. Moira also is a finalist in the female turf category, along with Lady Speightspeare and Fev Rover.
Lady Speightspeare also is a finalist for champion female sprinter and champion older female on the main track. Infinite Patience and Our Flash Drive are the other two in the older female on the main track category. The two others in the female sprinter category are Hazelbrook and Our Flash Drive.
Sir for Sure, Ironstone, and Hall of Dreams are the finalists for champion male 3-year-old.
In the male turf category, Breeders’ Stakes victor Sir for Sure is among four finalists (because of a tie in voting). The others are Filo Di Arianna, Philip My Dear, and Ready for the Lady.
Two-time Grade 2 winner Filo Di Arianna also made the top three for champion male sprinter, along with Arzak and Lucky Score.
The champion male 2-yearold finalists are Philip My Dear, Poulin in O T, and Velocitor.
Champion 2-year-old filly will be decided among Cairo Consort, Last Call, and Renegade Rebel.
The finalists for champion older male on the main track are Soy Tapatio, War Bomber, and Who’s the Star.
Outstanding broodmare finalists are Cosa Rara, Count to Three, and Include Katherine.
Outstanding breeder will be decided among Adena Springs, Sam-Son Farm, and Tall Oaks Farm.
Outstanding owner is up for grabs among Bruno Schickedanz, Al and Bill Ulwelling, and Moira’s partnership of X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables LLC, and SF Racing LLC.
Kevin Attard has a chance to top perennial winner Mark Casse in the trainer category. Josie Carroll is the other finalist.
There are four outstanding jockey finalists – Rafael Hernandez, Patrick Husbands, Kazushi Kimura, and EmmaJayne Wilson.
Outstanding apprentice jockey will be contested among Slade Jones, N’Rico Prescod, and Kimal Santo.
Moira and Lady Speightspeare are expected to be Horse of the Year finalists. The finalists and winner of the Horse of the Year will be announced after the other awards are doled out at the 48th Sovereign Awards ceremony on April 13 at the Universal Eventspace in Vaughan, Ontario. The winners of the three media categories also will be announced then.
