SIXTH RACE

-

HYDRO FROST is quick enough to make the lead dropping from maiden-40 to rock-bottom maiden20. He can be gone racing five and one-half furlongs. WEGONAHAVAGOODTIME is a must-use contender based on his SA dirt form. He sprinted twice over the track, runner-up in both including last out when he finished more than four lengths clear of third. MASTERMIND drops from maiden special-weight, shortens to a sprint and makes his first start since he was gelded. LEMON DROP SHOT is a 12-start maiden with 8 runner-up finishes. IRONDALE drops to the bottom for the first time. CURLY ESA has run races good enough to hit the board at a giant price. This maiden-20 actually drew a deep field.

SEVENTH RACE

MOUNT MARY has run well against better maiden special-weight company than the $50-62.5k maiden-claiming rivals she meets here. She stretches back to two turns with speed for a pressing trip; Frankie Dettori rides her back on the class drop. CHEEKIEST will give the top choice a battle while making her first start since an autumn debacle from which she was claimed. She broke slowly, was anchored at the back, then finished okay in a race won by the pacesetter. She was claimed by Mike Puype, who won with 6 of his last 11 firstoff-the-claim turf starters including a maiden. CHEEKIEST was claimed for $50k, and runs back for the same price. Cleverly named LUMINIFEROUS (by City of Light, produced by Wave Theory) drops from MSW and adds Lasix. FAYETTE FOX drops and stretches out.

EIGHTH RACE

Restricted stakes winner TEDDY’S BARINO and graded stakes winner ADARE MANOR are the principals in this filly-mare allowance sprint. ‘BARINO ran well as recently as autumn, while the best recent race by ‘MANOR was last spring. ‘BARINO makes her first start in four months, with a history of firing fresh, and proven sprint ability. ADARE MANOR crushed a G3 last winter as a 3yo and finished second in two subsequent Grade 2s. However, she runs best around two turns and is making her first start since September. She was stabled at Los Alamitos until a couple weeks ago; uncertain if she is cranked for her comeback. Second preference, nonetheless. The 2-for-2 IRONIC TWIST, Glatt-trained stablemate of the top choice, returns from a layoff of nearly a year with a solid workout pattern that suggests she is fit. UNA CHIQUITITA is a Group 1 winner from Chile making her U.S. debut for trainer Marcelo Polanco, who orchestrated a successful campaign last season with South American import Blue Stripe, runnerup in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

NINTH RACE

BIG SUMMER scored a sharp win last out against Cal-bred stakes fillies and mares on this downhill course, and gets the call to win right back in this restricted stake. She has enough tactical speed to stay within striking range of what could be a modest pace, she trained well since her win, and she fires every start: one-two in 9 of 11. BAY STORM, with two seconds and a third her last three starts in G3 races, gets class relief dropping into a restricted stake. She did everything but win two weeks ago in a G3 turf mile. She put away her pace rivals, but got collared late by a mare who rallied from last. ‘STORM certainly benefits by a cutback to a sprint; four career wins all were sprints. She should vie for favortism. EDDIE’S NEW DREAM finished less than a length behind the top choice last out, while FREEDOM FLYER has speed and drops from a decent third in a G3.
