How to play

- By Ron Gierkink

RACE 9:

Probable 2022 Canadian champion 2-year-old filly CAIRO CONSORT is unbeaten in two starts for trainer Todd Pletcher, including a breathtaking comefrom-behind score in the Grade 3 Sweetest Chant. DANSE MACABRE was a successful turf sprinter at 2 and is bred to go long on the dam’s side. She’s been working bullets at Palm Meadows. ANNA KARENINE looks best among the two Chad Brown-trained imports from France (3).

RACE 10:

CHARGE IT got a whopping 111 Beyer Speed Figure in his runaway victory in the Grade 3 Dwyer, after which he went to the sidelines with a foot problem. After going four wide on the first turn, the son of Tapit was a deceptively easy winner of his comeback in a conditioned allowance and might be the best dirt miler in the country (1).

RACE 11:

SPEAK OF THE DEVIL won a Grade 2 stakes at Churchill with a 98 Beyer the last time she returned from a layoff. She hasn’t started since ending up fourth in an ultra-key Grade 1 stakes at Belmont in June, but should be ready to roll. Another Chad Brown-trained comebacker, FAITH IN HUMANITY, is 2 for 3 with a second and should be the controlling speed. WHITE FROST and FAST AS FLIGHT are both exiting a victory and both reside in a live barn (4).

RACE 12:

RED CARPET READY is arguably the leader of the 3-year-old filly division on the continent. The unbeaten speedster shouldn’t mind moving out to a one-turn mile in this Grade 2 stakes. UNDERVALUED ASSET filled out the exacta behind Red Carpet Ready when coming off the bench in the Grade 3 Forward Gal in just her second start (2).

RACE 13:

ASTRONAUT and HIGHEST HONORS ran one-two in the Grade 2 Red Smith at Aqueduct in November over the 1 3/8-mile distance of this Grade 2 stakes. Both ran well at Gulfstream in the past. MASTER PIECE is getting some class relief after testing Grade 1 and 2 company. VALUE ENGINEERING is shortening up off a wide second here in the Grade 3 McKnight (4).

RACE 14:

ROCKET CAN overcame a four-wide trip to take the Grade 3 Holy Bull with an 82 Beyer, a number that can be upgraded to about a 90 when you factor in ground loss. The handsome son of Into Mischief and a Tapit mare appears to have room for improvement. MAGE put up an 89 Beyer in his front-running debut score in a seven-furlong maiden special. The Good Magic colt is bred to run on and could prove tough to catch. BLAZING SEVENS had a troubled break before checking in fourth in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and can fire when fresh. Reigning champion male 2-year-old Forte is worth trying to beat at a short price in his season opener (3).

THE PLAY: 1, 7, 9 / 7 / 1, 3, 4, 10 / 3, 5 / 1, 2, 7, 10 / 6, 7, 8 = $57.60 ticket
