Queen of the Green Arizona Oaks Turf Paradise Derby Phoenix Gold Cup Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile

- By Ron Gierkink

RACE 4: Santa Anita shipper ICE QUEEN beat $32,000 conditioned claimers last time out and would appear to be a good fit here with her effective tactical speed. Probable favorite YANKEE DOLLAR is seeking her fifth victory in a row and should be the controlling speed under leading rider Harry Hernandez. Hernandez is 11 for 26 at the meet for high-percentage trainer Marcus Vitali. MISS HARD KNOCKS closed inside for second behind Yankee Dollar in a recent stakes and should be along for another high placing, with a chance to win it all. LA CASTIGLIONE won her last two outings in stakes on different surfaces and is another worthy contender (4).

RACE 5: UNO PALABRA has run three solid races in as many starts, all on grass. She possesses a pedigree that leans more toward dirt than turf and shouldn’t mind the surface change. DON’T GET PICKLED hasn’t run a bad one since her five-furlong debut, which was too short for her. FAYETTE FOX wired high-priced maidens most recently at Santa Anita while claimed. Maiden OCEAN OF LIES is bred to go long (4).

RACE 6: TIZ TOK towers over this group off the two 70-plus Beyer Speed Figures he earned against maidens at Santa Anita. The Calumet-bred son of Tiznow has tactical speed and should take some beating off the claim by trainer John Sadler (1).

RACE 7: Southern California invaders RADICAL RIGHT, HOWBEIT, and ESCAPE ROUTE are all dropping out of the Grade 3 Palos Verdes. Radical Right overcame some early trouble to finish a clear second in that Santa Anita stakes. TRUTH SEEKER rallied from well back to prevail in each of his last two races in conditioned allowance/optional claimers and could prove best of the locals (4).

RACE 8: YES THIS TIME was in fine Gulfstream form before a wide seventh-place finish going 1 1/4 miles in the Grade 3 San Marcos most recently at Santa Anita. Cutting back to a middle distance coupled with some class relief should make him a player under Luis Contreras. SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT has competed in Grade 1 and 2 stakes since the summer of 2020 while going winless in his last 10 starts. He’s dropping off a cliff in this 100-grander and should be prominent at what figures to be an underlaid price. Stretch-runner SONNY SMACK beat two next-out winners in his Feb. 11 stakes score at Turf Paradise (3).

THE PLAY: 2, 3, 4, 7/ 1, 3, 6, 7 / 2 / 1, 2, 6, 9 / 4, 7, 12 = $96 ticket
