How to play

- By Kenny Peck

RACE 7: LIGHTS OF BROADWAY can improve with the addition of Lasix in this Columbia Stakes; strong fit on the strength of the Beyer he posted when 2nd in the Pulpit Stakes two back. WORTHINGTON gets back on the grass, and this is his best surface. TALK OF THE NATION was a game winner in his turf debut, and the resulting figure clearly stamps him as a contender as he makes his stakes debut. MO STASH makes his first start since a deceptively good try in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf; clearly dangerous if ready. FREEDOM TRAIL is 2 for 2 on the turf, and is training well toward his return (5).

RACE 9: SHANTISARA usually comes from off the pace, but given the lack of speed in the Hillsborough Stakes she can be expected to be on or near the lead;

RACE 8: SKIPPYLONGSTOCKING is going to be a handful in the Challenger. He has the best Beyers in the field and exits a deceptively decent try in the Pegasus, where he made a premature bid before tiring; has enough speed to at least stay close, and that will enable him to work out a favorable trip (1). that scenario would enable her to get the jump on main rival TEMPLE CITY TERROR. Temple City Terror is the one to fear in the lane in her seasonal bow; she was in very good form prior to the layoff and she’ll be running late if she gets any kind of help up front (2).

RACE 10: Using them all in the Florida Oaks, which drew a full and competitive group of 3-year-old fillies. With a race flow that’s not all that easy to plot and with the bulk of the field seemingly capable of winning, it may be best to cast a wide net and look for a price (12).

RACE 11: TAPIT TRICE was impressive in that optional-claiming score in his latest, and though he makes his first start in a stakes race today he may well be ready for it. Most of this Tampa Bay Derby field is coming out of the Sam F. Davis Stakes, which came up slow, and he does appear to be best of the rest (1).
