Speak Out

Midterm elections are still far away, but they really aren’t. For those who will be eligible to vote by the elections, make sure you get registered. And stop listening to the polls; that is partly where some of our apathy comes in. Less than 50 percent of eligible voters vote. Can you imagine the impact on election outcomes if everyone who could vote did? Ignore the political advertisements, but watch debates and read candidates’ biographies. Voting is pre- cious to people who don’t have that right to vote in their politicians, so think about what you are throwing away when you don’t vote.

Joe from Alsip is right. Itwas once said that “baseball was for the whole family to enjoy.” Owners are perplexed why attendance is down. The owners did it to themselves by giving outrageous salaries to the players. To com- pensate and make a profit, all other prices had to be raised. But $300/$400 for a family to attend just one game, that’s ridiculous.

In response to Joe in Alsip: I agree. Ted Williams would be paid billions of dollars if he played in today’s market. A friend recently went to a Cubs game, sat in the right-field lower upper deck, paid $69 dollars for the seat and $9.75 for a beer. It’s getting to where only the wealthy can go to the ballpark. In 1979, I took my son to a game. Box seats behind the Cubs dugout: $8 a seat.

As reported by Ted Slowik, Cook County is offering taxpayers input into the administration’s strategic plan in providing services, needs andwants for the county. That sounds great, but what their strategic plan really means is if House Speaker Mike Madigan and his Democratic cronies put their OK on it . . .
