There was a time when Rafael Bou wondered if he would ever suit up for Oak Lawn.

Bou, who played in a few games last year for Glenbard East, transferred for family reasons and had to sit out while Oak Lawn enjoyed one of the best seasons in program history with a 24-8 record.

But both Bou and basketball are back. The 6-foot senior guard called the abbreviated season a blessing Friday night after scoring 15 points for host Oak Lawn in a 55-39 South Suburban Red victory over Evergreen Park.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit and the season was on what felt like a permanent pause, Bou was itching to play again. He figured his chance to suit up as a Spartan, however, had vanished.

“I’m so grateful we have this season,” Bou said. “Last year, I was able to practice with the team and learn the offense. I watched the team go to work. They had a great season. I wanted to come in and carry on what they did.”

In his Oak Lawn debut, Bou scored 16 points on Feb. 9 in a 68-38 win over Tinley Park. He scored in single digits over the next seven games, including a two-point performance against T.F. North and a one-point effort against Shepard.

“I was overthinking,” he said. “I wasn’t locked in. But coach (Jason Rhodes) texted me and told me to keep my head up because we had more games. My teammates were telling me to stay up.”

He also listened.

In the past three games for Oak Lawn (9-3, 9-2), Bou scored 14 points against Bremen, 14 more against Lemont and then 15 against Evergreen Park (3-7, 3-7).

“I’m comfortable,” Bou said. “And now we’re rocking.”

Oak Lawn is the third high school in four years for Bou, who attended Schurz in Chicago as a freshman. And just when it looked like he was headed into this season feeling familiar and comfortable with an offense …

“I changed the offense this year,” Rhodes said. “He’s been trying to figure out what he’s supposed to do and when he needs to be aggressive. He’s really starting to figure that out.”

Bou scored seven points to help the Spartans grab a 14-10 lead in the first quarter against Evergreen Park. He added eight points in the third quarter for a 48-27 lead.

Nicco Reyes led Oak Lawn with 17 points and John McGowan had 10.

Offensively, Evergreen Park came into the game averaging 66 points, but the Mustangs were held to a season-low 39.

Nolan Bruce and Avantae LeFlore each scored eight points. Sharpshooting freshman Nolan Sexton was held to a basket in the first quarter and a free throw in the second.

“He was a big focus of our scouting report for sure,” Rhodes said of Sexton. “We wanted to hold him to below 10.

“I thought Rodney Washington did a great job and Gavin Butler subbed in to give Rodney a blow and also did a great job. We were committed to not giving him any

air space.”

Evergreen Park coach Jim Sexton hopes his team can snap a five-game losing streak and finish the season strong Monday at Tinley Park, Wednesday at Reavis and Friday at home against Argo.

“We’re at a point where we are trying to do some things with our motion offense,” Jim Sexton said.

“We’re not putting the motion into the motion offense. It’s just too slow.

“Guys are trying to learn the correct spots to go to, but we need to execute at a quicker pace against a defense this tough.”
