Elderly man, woman die after being struck by vehicle in Midlothian

An 80-year-old Oak Lawn man and a 75-year-old Hometown woman died after being hit by a vehicle Wednesday in a Midlothian retail center, according to authoritie­s.

Police said that a man suffered a medical incident while driving in the parking lot of a retail center at 144th Street and Pulaski Road shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, striking two pedestrian­s.

They and the driver were taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Thomas Coyne, of the 10100 block of Kildare Avenue, was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. at the hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He had suffered multiple injuries as a result of being hit by the vehicle and his death was ruled an accident, according to the office.

Kathleen Coyne, of the 4600 block of West 88th Street, was pronounced dead shortly before 3:30 p.m. at the hospital, according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy showed she died of multiple blunt-force injuries and ruled her death an accident.

Scott’s Garage Inc., an auto repair shop in Alsip, posted on Facebook Thursday it was sad to hear ofo the death of Tom Coyne and his sister Kathleen.

‘We will miss Tom, I remember driving him around in the golf cart every year at our Elim car show so he could see all the cars,” the post read.

Scott’s Garage organizes an annual car show at Elim Christian Services in Crestwood.

Midlothian police said their initial investigat­ion indicates the driver, who they described as an elderly man, accelerate­d and hit several parked vehicles and the pedestrian­s before coming to a stop.

Police said that the South Suburban Accident Reconstruc­tion Team is assisting in the investigat­ion and additional details about the accident were not available Thursday.
