Chicago man dies, Calif. woman critically injured in I-57 crash

A Chicago man died on Interstate 57 in Oak Forest overnight whenthe car hewas inrear-ended another car that was stopped on the road after becoming disabled, critically injuring a passenger in the first car, police said.

Two state transporta­tion workers also were injured in a later crash when someone hit two state trucks helping with traffic control on the highway, according to officials.

Roosevelt Logan, 23, of the 9700 block of South Wentworth Avenue, was pronounced dead at 12:04 a.m. at the sceneonI-57 near Cicero Avenue and 171st Street in Oak Forest, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Logan had been in, according to a release fromIllino­is State Police.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, and all southbound lanes of I-57 were closed at 167th Street for about five hours, according to state police.

The two cars were heading south on I-57 when the one the woman was in, a silver 2005 Nissan Altima, became disabled in the right lane and the car Logan was in, a white 2016 Nissan Sentra, moved from the center lane into the right lane, rearending the Altima, police said in a release.

The driver of the Sentra, a 44-year-old man from Lockport, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the car the woman was in, a 22-year-old Chicago man, as well as another passenger in his car, a 19-year-old Sacramento, California, woman, were not injured, police said.

About 2:10 a.m., a passenger car hit two Illinois Department of Transporta­tion trucks whose drivers were helping with traffic control, injuring the two drivers, state police said. The driverswer­e taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, police said.

No informatio­n about charges or citations was immediatel­y released.
