Missing Steger man’s body discovered at Portage marina

The body of a Steger man reported missing this month was found in a Portage marina Wednesday morning, officials said, adding foul play is not suspected.

The Porter County coroner’s office was called at 9:34 a.m. Wednesday toWesterma­nMarina, 1330 Crisman Road after the body of a deceased male was located in the dock area of the marina.

The man was identified as KeithMuehr­ing, 46, who last was heard from Nov. 8 and was reported missing to the Steger

Police Department on Nov. 9, according to the coroner’s office.

Portage police responded to the marina at 8:36 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a body floating in the water, police said, and the Portage Fire Department assisted in the recovery.

Portage police Chief Michael Candiano said officers with his department first went to the marina last week, on the Burns Ditch Waterway, to assist the Steger police, as Muehring went to fish there regularly and recovered his missing vehicle, aswell as conducted an extensive search of the area that day.

A representa­tive from WestermanM­arina reported the body to police, Candiano said, confirming that foul play is not suspected.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigat­ion.

On Saturday, a Portage man drowned in Dombey Lake after officials said he might have fallen from a kayak. Carlo Ernandes, 42, of Portage, was found unresponsi­ve and transporte­d toNorthwes­t Hospital Portage Campus, where he died in the emergency room.
