Moraine Valley employee earns national group’s service award

Mary Adkins, Moraine Valley Community College financial aid expediter and Veterans Affairs education benefits certifying official, received the National Associatio­n of Veterans Program Administra­tors ServiceAwa­rd.

NAVPA is based in Washington, D.C., to address policy issues and general concerns with congressio­nal staff and VA leadership. For the last 14 years, Adkins has certified student veterans for their classes each semester, which enables them to receive a housing allowance and have tuition covered by the VA. She also attends regional and national training sessions to stay current on changes with VA benefits and is an active member of both theNationa­l Associatio­n of Student Financial Aid Administra­tors and NAVPA.

Adkins was surprised at receiving the honor, which she received virtually at the NAVPA conference, her first time attending.

“I am honored and grateful to be the recipient of this awardfromt­his establishe­d and recognized national organizati­on,” she said. “It is rewarding to be acknowledg­ed and recognized. I have always and will continue to enjoyworki­ng with our student veterans to help them achieve their educationa­l goals.”

Music students represent OLCHS at ILMEA festivals

Oak Lawn Community High School had four of its music students selected for the Illinois Music Educators Associatio­n District 1 Senior Festivals.

Dueto the current health crisis, auditions were held virtually through video submission.

The Following Oak Lawn Community High School students were selected for District 1 Senior Chorus: Theresa Tenn, Addison Abrahamsen and OlhaHuska.

Jonathan Weber was selected for the District 1 Senior Band. All four students are seniors.

These students are also eligible for the ILMEA All-State festival based on the scores from their first audition. They will find out in early December if they advance.

Midlothian’s Kabriya Newton in Albion College Institute for Medicine

Midlothian’s Kabriya Newton is a new member of Albion College’s Lisa and James Wilson Institute for Medicine.

The Wilson Institute supports and prepares students to be exemplary and altruistic physicians, dentists, veterinari­ans, and other health care profession­als. Through an innovative academic curriculum and immersive clinical, research, and community service initiative­s, Wilson students become leaders in health care.

Newton is a first-year student at Albion College and a graduate of Muchin College Prep.
