Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill said Wednesday he has concluded an investigation of a former Gary abortion doctor who stored more than 2,400 fetal remains in a garage at his Illinois home.

A release recounted the discovery of the medically preserved fetal remains by Ulrich Klopfer’s family after his death on Sept. 3, 2019.

Klopfer lived in Will County, Illinois, and also operated clinics in South Bend and Fort Wayne.

Hill’s investigation concluded Klopfer acted alone and no criminal charges would be filed in the wake of his death. Officials said the remains are believed to be from Klopfer’s medical practice from 2000 to 2003.

Authorities found 2,246 fetal remains and thousands of health records in Klopfer’s garage. The remains were found in molding boxes and old plastic foam coolers in various states of decay, the release said.

An additional 165 fetal remains were discovered in the trunk of one of his vehicles at an Illinois garage.

“This horrific ordeal is exactly why we need strong laws to ensure the dignified disposition of fetal remains,” Hill stated in the release.

The remains were buried in a

South Bend cemetery in February at a service attended by Hill.

Klopfer’s Friendship

Family Planning Clinic, at 3711 Washington St., Gary, closed in 2015 after Klopfer was charged with failing to timely file a public report related to an abortion he performed in 2012 on a 13-year-old girl.

The state suspended his medical license in 2016 after other complaints and criminal charges surfaced.

As part of the investigation, authorities searched Klopfer’s former Gary clinic, a nearby garage and storage units in Hobart.

Old unsecured medical records and other evidence were removed and transferred to Indianapolis in two 26-foot moving trucks with the approval of Klopfer’s family.
