A difficult childhood has inspired Oak Lawn high schooler Sammantha Carmolinga to work toward becoming the social worker she wishes she’d had.

Lemont’s Yavaraski shines in design contest

Lemont High School’s Technology Student Associatio­n advanced three entries to the state’s top drafting contest. At the Illinois Design Educators Associatio­n Regional, which was contested virtually and scored by Joliet Junior College, senior Genna Yavaraski placed first in the Architectu­ral Board division.

Also, senior Karl Ramski advanced in Assembly Modeling, while seniors Caden Brennan, Matas Carmichael and Michael Doyle moved on in team competitio­n.

The IDEA State Competitio­n will be held virtually on April 16-17.

OLCHS’ Wargin wins national education award

Oak Lawn Community High School’s

Jennifer Wargin was awarded the National Art Education Associatio­n Western Region Secondary Art Educator of the Year Award.

Wargin is an art educator and instructio­nal coach.

“Jen exemplifie­s dedication to Art Education in her leadership and collaborat­ion with fellow profession­als,” said Nick Hostert, Illinois Art Education Associatio­n president.

Six area seniors win Good Citizen Awards

The Swallow Cliff Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently honored the DAR Good Citizen Awards to these six high school seniors: William DeFrancisc­o (St. Laurence High School), Isabel Knight (Oak Forest), Mae Lopez (Chicago Christian), Marina Moorer (Tinley Park), Kelsi Padalia (Lemont) and Althena Yu (Andrew). Yu also advanced to the DAR District IV competitio­n.

Southland students lead Iowa Dance Marathon

Chicago’s Katie Canavan, Crete’s Julia Albrecht and Frankfort’s Catherine Miles were among the more than 275 University of Iowa students who served in leadership positions for Iowa’s annual Dance Marathon.

They helped the event successful­ly navigate the changes to the largest student-run activity by COVID-19 en route to generating $1.4 million of support for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

New Lenox fire chief earns profession­al title

New Lenox Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Dennis Randolph has completed the process that awards him the profession­al designatio­n of Chief Fire Officer.

The designatio­n program is a voluntary program designed to recognize people who demonstrat­e their excellence in seven measured components including experience, education, profession­al developmen­t, profession­al contributi­ons, associatio­n membership, community involvemen­t and technical competence. In addition, all applicants are required to identify a future profession­al developmen­t plan.

He is one of only 1,550 CFOs worldwide.

Palos Park’s Evans selected as strengths coach

Henry Evans of Palos Park was one of 50 University of Nebraska-Lincoln students selected as a new strengths coach in the College of Business’ Clifton Strengths Institute.

Evans is a freshman finance major at the university. He will lead a team of 10 students in weekly meetings, facilitate one-on-one sessions and help coordinate discussion­s. Canisius College fall 2020 dean’s/merit list
