North & Maple Kitchen and Bar will hold its grand opening and ribbon cutting Thursday in Tinley Park’s entertainment area near 183rd Street and North Creek Drive.

The restaurant opened in June at 18401 North Creek Drive and hopes to have better luck at this location than its two previous tenants.

The building opened in 2014 as an Irish bar called Ariels. It lasted two years and was replaced in 2016 by a bar and grill called Side Street Tavern. That closed earlier this year and was converted into North & Maple.

The grand opening will include a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m., a stein hoisting competition at 6 p.m. and music by Liam Durkin at 7:30 p.m. There will be prizes, giveaways and a photo booth.

The menu includes cheese curds, burgers, tacos, sandwiches and entrees. The bar offers a wide selection of whiskey, bourbons, wine and craft beers.

Smith Village marks $23M modernization

Smith Village, a senior living community in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, has finished a $23 million modernization of its skilled nursing care, short-term stay rehab wing.

This newest construction project quadruples the number of private suites and rooms for rehab and skilled nursing care residents by reducing its licensed beds to 78 from 100. Smith Village also built an all-new 3-story addition that houses therapy areas and dining rooms.

Planning for this project began in 2017 and construction was accelerated because tradespeople were named essential workers during the pandemic, making this wing ready for total occupancy six months sooner than initially planned. In addition to the modernization of the Johanson Wing, other recent updates totaling $6 million include the addition of a pub and theater as well as renovation of the community hall and main entrance built in 2008.

Smith Village, which opened at its current location at 2320 W. 113th Place in 1924, transformed its original campus with new construction valued at $68 million in 2008 to create a contemporary continuing care retirement community. Today, Smith Village is home to close to 250 people.
