Oak Lawn swimmers win; Evergreen Park alum receives new scholarship at UIC
After a season filled with record-breaking performances, the Oak Lawn Community High School girls swimming and diving team had high expectations for the recent South Suburban Conference Red meet and surpassed them, winning 10 of 12 swimming events and capturing first place in diving.
The varsity team won the conference championship by scoring 313 points. The closest competition was second-place Reavis with 259, followed by Richards with 215.
“I’m really proud of the way our girls swam on all levels,” said Oak Lawn head coach Derek Maciaga. “They worked so hard throughout the season, and it feels good to come out on top as conference champions.”
Lilly Featherstone, Lizzy Featherstone, Alessandra Gabrial, Rylee Gallagher, Ella Hennessey, Amelia Kozlowski and Erin Walker were among the top athletes to help lead the team to the conference title.
The Spartans advance to the Nov. 6 sectional meet at Sandburg with hopes to qualify out of Orland Park and advance to the state meet.
Evergreen Park alum receives new scholarship at UIC
Victor Leal-Painter, a 2021 alum of Evergreen Park Community High School, is the first recipient of a new scholarship enacted at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Now a freshman at UIC, LealPainter was awarded the Davee Foundation Scholarship, an award for high-achieving history and English undergraduates at the university. Leal-Painter, who hopes to become a history teacher, will receive full tuition at UIC until graduation for up to five years but must maintain at least a 3.0 gradepoint average.
“Usually, a student has two things in their head when they think of college: studying and figuring out how to pay for it,” Leal-Painter said. “I was so relieved that now I could focus entirely on my education.”
