Shiffrin ties record with victory in slalom

-

Mikaela Shiffrin marked the return of the women’s World Cup to North America by setting yet another record — and the two-time Olympic champion did it Sunday on home snow.

Shiffrin beat Petra Vlhova — her main rival — for her 46th career win in slalom. That matched a 32-year-old record for most World Cup wins in a single discipline, set by Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark in giant slalom.

While the 26-year-old Shiffrin hails from Vail, Colorado, she can almost consider Killington, Vermont, a hometown race as she honed her skills nearby at the Burke Mountain Academy as a teen.

Baseball: The Rays and two-time AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber agreed to a one-year deal worth at least $8 million, according to reports. Kluber, 35, was 5-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 80 innings last season for the Yankees. He threw a no-hitter May 19 but missed most of the summer with a shoulder injury . ... The Rangers and INF Marcus Semien reached agreement on a seven-year contract worth $175 million, ESPN reported. Semien, 31, hit 45 HRs for the Blue Jays last season, breaking Brian Dozier’s MLB record for HRs by a second baseman. ... The Twins and OF Byron Buxton, 27, agreed to a seven-year, $100 million extension, ESPN reported. The deal also includes a full no-trade clause.

College football: David Cutcliffe won’t return for a 15th season as Duke’s coach after the school announced a “mutual agreement for separation” following the Blue Devils’ winless ACC record. Cutcliffe, 67, had transformed the Blue Devils from one of the nation’s worst performers into a regular bowl contender and even claimed a division title in the ACC in 2013 before the program slid badly the last two seasons.

NBA: The Bucks will sign 31-year-old former All-Star C DeMarcus Cousins, ESPN reported.
