Bremen business students lauded at state, national levels

Nearly two dozen Bremen High School students participat­ing in the Distributi­ve Education Clubs of America have been excelling in the Knowledge Matters Virtual Business Challenge, earning recognitio­n as Top 10 in the state in their respective categories.

Those students include Alex Hernandez (entreprene­urship, 4th in state), Gerardo Mondragon (entreprene­urship, 4th), Jesus Cruz (entreprene­urship, 4th) Beyonce Gutierrez (entreprene­urship, 6th), Evelyn Roman (fashion, 6th), Angel Nunez (fashion 9th), Dayanara Lemus (fashion, 10th), Andrea Correa (restaurant, 5th), Alyna Garibaldi (restaurant, 5th), Camryn Ferrin (restaurant, 5th), Luis Contreras (restaurant, 6th), Sophia Pritchett (restaurant, 9th), Brandon Mercado (hotel, 2nd), Steven Josephson (hotel, 4th), Jordy Martinez (hotel, 5th), Jovany Acuna (hotel, 6th), Alan Chavez (hotel, 7th), Angel Diaz (hotel, 8th), Jaylan Holder (hotel, 9th), Jada Borum (sports, 10th), Josue Arriaga (sports, 3rd), Johanna Martinez (sports, 6th) and Esther Martinez (sports, 7th).

Bremen students also excelled in the national competitio­n. With over 5,000 students competing, all students placed in the Top 10 percentile and 13 of those students placed in the top 2% of the competitio­n. Mercado came in 30th place overall in the hotel challenge and was placed in the top 1%. The second round of challenges in the Knowledge Matters Virtual Business Challenge will take place Jan. 18-28.

Joliet-based team wins World Pool Championsh­ip in Vegas

A group of pool players on a team based Joliet are $50,000 richer after a recent visit to Sin City.

The team dubbed the Scorpions won the 2020-2021 American Poolplayer­s Associatio­n World 8-Ball Championsh­ip in late October in Las Vegas.

The Scorpions were one of 1,091 teams to qualify for the APA World 8-Ball Championsh­ip. Team members include William Johnson, August Miksys, Rodrigo Lopez-Hernandez, Jose Salas, Andrea Salas, Robert Pena, Kristie Skinner and Leonardo Lopez-Hernandez.

Lewis University’s Zeta Xi Chapter wins award

The Zeta Xi Chapter in Lewis University’s College of Business was recently recognized by the national business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi for its outstandin­g service.

The national award for Outstandin­g Service Award for a Collegiate Chapter is presented on an annual basis to the collegiate chapter of Delta Sigma Pi that plans and implements the most effective and comprehens­ive program of service to others.

Zeta Xi Chapter members include Joanna Chodorowic­z of Hickory Hills as well as Lockport’s David Bruining, Orland Park’s Kristina Mulica and Tinley Park’s Katarzyna Fasano and Paul Krupa.

Richton Park’s Kruel graduates from Emporia State

Jasmin Romani Kruel of Richton Park graduated from Emporia State University in August.

Area athletes help UW-Whitewater football team roll on

Brookfield’s Brendan Cavanaugh, Bridgeview’s Douglas Kosch, Lockport’s Quinn Kelly and Park Forest’s Nehemiah Lomax are members of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team that won 11 straight games.

The Warhawks finished the regular season undefeated and clinched a share of the program’s 38th conference championsh­ip. They opened the playoffs with a 69-7 victory over Greenville.
