Beverly’s Waddell lauded by St. Coletta’s

- By C.r. Walker

Beverly native William Waddell was presented with the Humanitas Award by the St. Coletta’s of Illinois Foundation at the 69th Annual Caritas Benefit in May.

Waddell’s efforts have been making a difference for the past 55 years, according to St. Coletta’s. He’s been a steadfast humanitarian since leaving the Army in 1967 and joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, purchasing Easter hams and distributing them at the St. Gall Food Pantry, brightening the days of residents at Avantara Rehab and Belhaven Nursing and Rehabilitation and raising money to further St. Coletta’s of Illinois’ mission of serving children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“He’s always thinking about who he can help,” said St. Coletta’s of Illinois Executive Director Annette Skafgaard. “He’s a real humanitarian.”

At St. Coletta’s of Illinois, Waddell has been instrumental in securing donations for the nonprofit, recruiting others to the board and teaming up with Catholic Charities to provide vocational work for students in the Catholic Charities Thrift Shop.

Palos South’s Doornbos recognized for promoting safe schools

Palos South Middle School Assistant Principal Meagan Doornbos was recognized by the Illinois Chapter National School Public Relations Association for her work promoting the efforts of the Palos South Save Promise Club.

Doornbos received the Award of Excellence in the school administrator category at an awards luncheon in May. Her efforts have included promotions for the school’s Save Promise Week with events meant to foster new connections, friendships and inclusivity among students.

She also has led student trainings to recognize the signs of violence in schools, outreach to future club members in the fifth grade and brought that message to the wider community through green ribbon campaigns that have decorated the area library and nearby downtown.

In addition, Palos South Middle School was named one of the winners of Say Something Week Award by the nonprofit organization Sandy Hook Promise. The Palos South campaign was aimed at creating a more inclusive school environment and reducing school violence.
