A 1-year-old girl was among three dead after a Sunday night expressway shooting on Chicago’s Interstate 57 that left three more people wounded, authorities say.

The 1-year-old child was identified as A-mara Hall, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Two teenagers, William

Smith, 13, and Nasir Hall, 19, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The shots broke out in the northbound lane of I-57 near 111th Street in the Morgan Park neighborhood at 10:37 p.m., Illinois State Police said. The targeted vehicle pulled over at an expressway ramp.

The 1-year-old girl was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, medical examiners said. Authorities said she was shot in the torso. Authorities pronounced the two teens dead at the site near West 111th Street and South Bishop Street where the targeted white SUV pulled over, Chief Juan Hernandez said.

Besides the three fatalities, three others were wounded in the shooting, state police spokesman Josh Robinson said. Paramedics transported a 14-year-old boy to Comer Children’s Hospital in “fair-to-critical” condition.

State police declined to say where the other two victims were hospitalized or confirm their ages.

“This investigation is still in its infancy. To protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information is available at this time,” Robinson said.

Andrew Holmes, a wellknown Chicago community activist, urged anyone with information to come forward.

“There’s so many baby killers on the street,” Holmes said. “It’s just so troubling. This baby lost her life and never got a chance to let us see what her capabilities are as far as her future. That’s been taken away from her.”

Holmes said he spoke with state police officials, who are seeking possible witnesses.

“We just need help,” he said.

State police closed the northbound lane of I-57 from

West 127th Street to West 111th Street but reopened the expressway shortly after 4 a.m. The shooting is the 16th reported shooting on a Chicago-area expressway in 2023, ISP data shows.
