Chiefs back on top after unbeatens fall

- By Karen Guregian | masslive.com

Week 6 in the NFL started off with Taylor Swift continuing her unbeaten streak.

Every Chiefs game the mega pop star and girlfriend of Travis Kelce has attended, has produced a win for defending Super Bowl champions.

Week 6 also started off with the league having two unbeaten teams left. Now, there’s none with that distinction.

Both the 49ers and Eagles were handed their first losses of the season.

Both were taken down by teams with two of the league’s best defenses, as the 49ers were upset by the Browns, while the Eagles were stunned by the Jets.

Elsewhere, the Dolphins and Lions continued to win in impressive fashion, while the Bengals have crept back to even after a disasterous start.

Here are the power rankings heading into Week 7:

1. Chiefs (5-1): There’s no stopping the Patrick Mahomesto-Kelce connection, especially when Swift is in the building.

2. 49ers (5-1): They went from invincible through the first five weeks to mortal in Week 6, thanks in part to the Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey injuries.

3. Dolphins (5-1): They were down 14-0 to the winless Panthers before snapping out of it. Five TDs later, the Fins were on their way to a rout.

4. Lions (5-1): For the 15th straight game, the Lions scored 20 or more points. That’s best in the NFL right now.

5. Eagles (5-1): Jalen Hurts threw more picks than Zach Wilson. What’s wrong with that picture?

6. Cowboys (4-2): Their stars all came to play Monday night against the Chargers as Jerry’s boys put last week’s beatdown by the 49ers behind them.

7. Jaguars (4-2): They cruised to another win, but held their breath when Trevor Lawrence left with a knee injury. The star quarterback didn’t return but appears to be fine.

8. Bills (4-2): It was almost like London revisited, only they weren’t in London. The Bills were sleepwalking against the Giants but finally woke up in the second half.

9. Ravens (4-2): Justin Tucker kicked six field goals. Which begs the question — what happened to the Ravens vaunted red-zone offense?

10. Browns (3-2): They took down the 49ers with a backup quarterback. Who saw that coming?

11. Steelers (3-2): Fans had an entire week off to continue knocking offensive coordinator Matt Canada and fantasize about possible replacements.

12. Rams (3-3): Sean McVay continues to work his magic with Matthew Stafford and the Rams offense.

13. Bengals (3-3): The offense is a bit erratic but they’re up off the mat and back in the AFC North race.

14. Seahawks (3-2): They were better than the Bengals in practically every offensive category except one — points.

15. Jets (3-3): They were left for dead after Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury. After two straight wins, they’re very much alive.

16. Buccaneers (3-2): Baker Mayfield turned into a pumpkin wearing those creamsicle throwback uniforms.

17. Chargers (2-3): Most people would put their money on Justin Herbert to deliver down three, with over two minutes left. The Cowboys defense had other ideas.

18. Colts (3-3): Relief wizard Gardner Minshew came back to earth, committing four turnovers playing for injured starter Anthony Richardson.

19. Commanders (3-3): They’ll take an ugly road win over the alternative.

20. Texans (3-3): DeMeco Ryans’ defense can certainly bring it, generating 26 pressures against the Saints. That’s the third best of any team this season.

21. Raiders (3-3): A collection of Patriots castoffs had fun gaining revenge against their former team.

22. Saints (3-3): That offensive breakthrough last week against the Patriots? Never mind.

23. Falcons (3-3): Arthur Smith has some explaining to do after some late game debauchery down by the goal line.

24. Packers (2-3): They spent their week off trying to figure out how to score more points, and fix Jordan Love so he won’t get benched.

25. Vikings (2-4): They’ve partially dug out of their 0-3 hole. With an angry 49ers team on deck, good luck with that.

26. Titans (2-4): Mike Vrabel has a week off to figure out whether he wants to stick with Ryan Tannehill, who aggravated an ankle injury, go to Malik Willis, or rookie Will Levis.

27. Cardinals (1-5): They got off to a decent start, but reality is catching up with them.

28. Giants (1-5): Does it matter that Darren Waller got held in the end zone on the game’s final play? Given they botched a goal-line situation right before the half, probably not.

29. Patriots (1-5): Time to think about the future.

30. Broncos (1-5): Sean Payton got his first taste of the futility streak against the Chiefs, which is now up to 16 straight losses, the longest in the NFL.

31. Bears (1-5): The bad news? Justin Fields dislocated his thumb. The good news? They currently hold the first two picks in the 2024 draft, one courtesy of the Panthers.

32. Panthers (0-6): Did they really put a scare into the Dolphins after racing out to a two-score lead? Doubt it.
