Clay County Supes to send representatives to National Sheriffs Conference
On Tuesday, January 3, the Clay County Board of Supervisors met for their first regular meeting of the new year. During the meeting, the board voted on many beginning-of-the-year housekeeping decisions.
Also during the meeting, the board talked with Eddie Scott, the sheriff for Clay County, who requested to travel to the National Sheriffs Conference in Washington, DC this February. The Board decided to approve this travel but to also send representatives of the board of supervisors to the capitol along with the sheriff.
“February is our National Sheriffs Conference, and you all know that I serve on three of the national committees. Homeland security, governmental affairs, and drug enforcement,” said Scott. “This is our meeting every year, where we go to Capitol Hill and end up visiting with our Senators for a few days. And as always, I encourage you all to go and visit with the senators and representatives as well.”
Scott also requested to travel with Steven Young, who is currently over the Patrol Division for Clay County. The board approved this request, before beginning a discussion about who else would go to Washington DC with the sheriff.
“On that Washington DC trip… Someone else needs to go. Someone else… needs to go to see what's going on. And we've got three men around this table who may be able to do that,” said District 4's Shelton L. Deanes.
The board began to discuss which representatives of the board would accompany Scott and Young to Washington DC, along with which funds this travel would come from. Further discussion of travel is likely to occur at future meetings.
Tuesday's meeting also included beginning-of-the-year voting on personnel. Lynn Horton was once again approved as President of the board for 2023, while R.B. Davis was selected to be Vice President. Angela Ford was asked to return as Board Attorney in 2023. The board also appointed Robert Calvert Sr. as County Engineer for 2023 and Randy Jones as Flood Plain Coordinator for 2023, and appointed Amy G. Berry, Chancery Clerk, as the County Designee to facilitate the Homestead Exemption Laws for the year 2023.
The Clay County Board of Supervisors also approved their meeting time and place schedule for the year 2023. These meetings are open to the public.
“This is the resolution that you will meet here in the Clay County Courtroom the first Monday of the month, the Thursday following the first Monday, and the fourth Thurs
day each month,” said Chancery Clerk Amy Berry. “Other than that, the resolution outlines that your meetings will start at 9:00. This resolution is posted downstairs in the locked cabinet.”
There are a few exceptions to this meeting schedule, including legal holidays. This schedule is subject to change and may be affected by recesses that the board takes throughout the year. The Clay County website will be updated as often as possible. Anyone who wants to speak to the board from the floor must give 24 hours' notice, and call the Chancery Clerk to be added to the agenda.
“If you want to be added to the agenda, you must give 24 hours' notice, and give the clerk a call,” said Lynn Horton of District 1. “You must state your topic, and you will be allowed three minutes.”
