SCOOBA – Mackenzie Byrd was elevated to interim head softball coach at East Mississippi Community College, as announced recently by EMCC Director of Athletics Sharon Thompson. Along with Byrd's promotion, EMCC has announced that former University of West Alabama and Jones College pitcher Kaeleigh Crutchfield has been hired as the Lions' assistant softball coach.

The announcements come on the heels of former

Whitney

Hawkins having recently taken a position on the University of North Alabama's softball coaching staff. A former middle infielder at CopiahLincoln Community College and Alabama State University, Byrd was Hawkins' assistant coach during EMCC's 2022 softball season.

“I have confidence in Coach Mack's leadership abilities, and I believe she is ready to guide our softball team as the Lions' interim head coach,” Thompson said. “Because Coach Mack worked very closely with Coach ( Whitney) Hawkins last season, we're confident that our softball program will continue to progress. We also wish Coach Hawkins the very best in her future softball coaching endeavors.”

Byrd said she was thankful for the opportunity that Thompson and the EMCC administration have given her and the leadership that Hawkins provided.

“Coach Hawkins did a great job with the team last season and that experience of working with her will hopefully result in future success for the Lions,” Byrd said.

Upon graduation from Alabama State in 2020, Byrd moved to Hattiesburg to begin jointly working as an assistant manager for D1 Training and also as a softball instructor for the DBAT softball academy. Byrd served as a softball instructor and coach for two years while also helping young athletes develop their individual training programs.

Following her two seasons at Copiah-Lincoln, Byrd transferred to Montgomerybased Alabama State of the Southwestern Athletic Conference. After redshirting the 2018 season, she went on to make 29 total starts during her two-year Alabama State playing career. As a redshirt junior, Byrd was a member of the Lady Hornets' 2019 SWAC Tournament Championship team.

A former multi-sport athlete at Leakesville's Greene County High School, Byrd began her college career at Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson. As a freshman, the Richton native batted .271 as a member of the 2016 Lady Wolves' team that posted records of 29-14 overall and 19-11 in league play to advance to the state tournament. Byrd went on to hit .264 as a 33-game starter during her sophomore season at Co-Lin.

“I am very thankful to have come across Coach Crutch during our coaching search,” Byrd said about Crutchfield's addition. “She was an outstanding pitcher at West Alabama and at Jones College within our conference, so she will provide tremendous help with our pitching staff. With her high energy at practices and during game days, she and I will work well together and be a very balanced coaching staff.”

Crutchfield posted a twoyear pitching record of 11-10, while making 36 total appearances with 20 starts, during the past two seasons at UWA. After going 5-3 as a junior in 2021, Crutchfield finished second on the Tigers' staff with a 6-7 mark during 20 appearances and 13 starts in the circle last season.

“I am so excited for this opportunity to work alongside Coach Mack to begin my coaching career here at EMCC,” Crutchfield said. “I have always considered myself to be a student of the game, so I look forward to hopefully being able to play a key role in influencing the lives of young ladies both on and off the softball field.”

Prior to her West Alabama playing days, Crutchfield split two seasons between NJCAA softball powerhouses Jones College and LSU Eunice. As a sophomore at Jones, she made 10 pitching appearances for the Bobcats' 43-8 team that claimed the 2019 regularseason conference championship. The year prior as a college freshman, Crutchfield was 3-1 with a shutout and a save, while making 20 appearances with six starts, for the 49-20 LSUE Bengals' squad that finished fourth in the 2018 NJCAA Division II Tournament.

As a multi-sport studentathlete at Clinton Christian Academy, Crutchfield capped her successful prep career in the circle by posting a 20-2 record with 173 strikeouts and a 1.54 earned run average in 120 innings pitched as a senior. The right-handed pitching ace earned district Most Valuable Player and MAIS AllState honors in helping lead the CCA Warriors to the 2017 South State and district championships.
