WPCCAC hosts auditions for Hee Haw variety show

- By ABIGAIL SIPE ROCHESTER

This spring, the West Point Clay County Arts Council is once again transforming Clay County into Kornfield Kounty. This week, the arts council announced that they will be holding auditions for their Hee Haw Variety Show on February 9 and February 11. Donna Ross, the Chairman for the Theatre Committee of the West Point Clay County Arts Council, discussed the council's excitement to once again bring the variety show to the West Point community.

“In March of 2019, we did a Hee Haw Variety Show. It's a great show. It includes a lot of people who may not want to act, but they want to do a song or an act,” Ross said. “It's a really different approach than a play.”

When the arts council put on the Hee Haw Variety Show in 2019, the show involved a 20 to 25 person cast, complete with solo songs, group songs, and comedy performances. Just like the classic TV show that ran between 1969 and 1992, West Point's Hee Haw Variety Show involved all kinds of performances, special guests, and lots of fun.

Now that the Hee Haw Variety Show is returning, and the arts council is looking for the community to get involved once again. On February 9 at 6:00 p.m. and on February 11 at 9 a.m., the council is holding auditions at the Louise Campbell Center for the Arts for adults who are 18-years-old and older.

“The auditions are next week on February 9 and February 11,” said Ross. “We'll be looking for some solo acts, but then we'll also be looking for some other things, too. One of the things that was in the TV show was cornfield jokes, the jug band, the washboard band, and the gossip girls. So we'll be looking for people to perform those things and to do some group numbers as well.”

Ross encouraged everyone in the community to come and audition for the Hee Haw Variety Show. The arts council wants to involve as many members of the community in the show as possible, as a way to get everyone involved in a show again after the pandemic.

“If you come on Thursday night or Saturday morning, we can find a place for you, either in a group number or a solo number. Or we can use you in the backstage group, or for sound or mics or costumes,” Ross said. “There are so many ways to plug in and help us to pull off this show.”

All members of the community over the age of 18 are invited to come audition for the show. The show's production dates are on March 23, 24, and 25. For more information, you can follow the West Point Clay County Arts Council's Facebook Page.
