Supes approve work for Bryan Public Library
The Bryan Public Library is in for another update. During the regular meeting of the Clay County Board of Supervisors this past Thursday, the board received bids from contractors to work on handrails and carpeting for the Bryan Public Library. By the end of the meeting, the supervisors had approved two contracts, allowing the work to move forward.
“We have two quotes for the library project that we've been working on. We have some money that is still left over, and there's still more work that they wanted and needed done,” said LaFrance Boyd, Deputy Chancery Clerk for Clay County. “One thing that we're planning to do is to get brick and concrete rail work done over there… We also need to talk about carpeting as well.”
The library has been undergoing renovations and repairs over the past several months, with indoor repairs ongoing since August 2022. The library requested new handrails to help with disability access at the front entrance of the building. They also requested new carpeting for the book nook area and nonfiction areas, along with the Young Adult section.
Supervisor Luke Lummus for District 2 asked Boyd whether the board had the funding to cover these charges. Boyd answered in the affirmative, citing $ 24000 leftover of the MS Legislative Monies that the board appropriated for work on the library.
The Clay County Board of Supervisors received two bids for each project. First, for the hand- railing project, they received a bid from Columbus Fence and Dewberry Construction for the brick, concrete, and railing work. The board approved the bid from Columbus Fence for a total of $ 12,250.
The board also received bids on the carpeting job for the Bryan Public Library from the Floor Gallery of Columbus and Dewberry Construction. The Floor Gallery had the most competitive rate, at $ 6552,72. This bid was approved by the Board of Supervisors.
After the discussion of the work on the library, the supervisors also received a presentation from Sheriff Eddie Scott, who
updated the board on his trip to the National
Sheriff 's Conference in Washington D. C. Sheriff Scott was accompanied to Washington by members of the Board of Supervisors, who presented a congressional packet to Senator Cindy Hyde- Smith.
“They were impressed that everything was already laid out when we got there,” said Scott. “We've already been getting calls and emails on some of the projects we submitted… Hopefully, soon, we'll be bringing home some bacon.”
