Green Wave on the road again

- By DANNY P. SMITH

A famous Willie Nelson song could be the theme for the West Point Green Wave baseball team so far this season.

The Green Wave could definitely whistle the tune, “On the road again.”

West Point has not been able to play any home games this year because of renovations that are taking place at Taylor Field.

There are upgrades being made with the press box, grand stand and bathrooms with new concrete being poured around.

West Point head coach Mitch Bohon said “it's been a big project,” and looks forward to being able to use the new facility soon and maybe as early as next week.

In the meantime, the Green Wave have been playing home games at East Mississippi Community College in Scooba.

Bohon has a connection with the Lions to make using their home field as a home away from home possible.

“I went there, played there and have a relationship with them,” Bohon said. “They've definitely helped us out tremendously letting us play some home games there. It's somewhere that gives us a sense of being the home team for once.”

West Point will play New Hope to open the Class 5A, Region 1 schedule this week.

After Tuesday night's game in Lowndes County, the Green Wave and Trojans will meet at EMCC for the second game Thursday night.

After 11 games prior to district play, West Point has a 5-6 record. The Green Wave are coming off a spring break trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where they won one out of three games.

Bohon believes there are some areas of West Point's game that needs improvement but sees progress being made.

“We could be doing better,” Bohon said honestly. “Offensively, we have struggled a little bit. We've thrown the ball as well as we could. Defensively, we are getting better. Offensively, we've got to get going. We lost Tyrese ( Johnson) at the beginning of the year and we're still trying to figure out how to play without him. It's hurt us, but we're starting to click a little bit and we are swinging it better. It just needs to click all at one time.”

When it comes to playing New Hope, Bohon knows it won't be easy for the Green Wave to go against the tradition of the Trojans.

That is something that Bohon continues to build in West Point.

“You've got to beat the name on the front,” Bohon said. “We are working on creating a culture that can compete with that. We're making strides in the right direction. We've just got to put it all together.”
