The Fish Shack: Southern comfort food with a twist

- By DEVIN AMMONS

One local business owner is bringing a traditional twist to Southern comfort food.

For 29 years The Fish Shack has been a local fixture in the West Point community. From their staple meal of fried fish to their mouth watering fried green tomatoes, it's clear that they are more than an asset to the area.

Diane Donald, owner of The Fish Shack, is no stranger to the restaurant business. Donald's family has been feeding the community for nearly three decades and does not plan to slow down any time soon. Their business has become a weekly hotspot for many over the years, and their food is one of the biggest driving factors behind that.

“We do fish, chicken wings, burgers and more,” said Donald. “Some of our sides are fries, cole slaw, okra, onion rings, pasta salad, and our fried green tomatoes. We also have regular fries, spicy fries, corn nuggets, and so on.”

Everything at The Fish Shack is made fresh to order, ensuring that the customer gets top quality food. For Donald, keeping with their tradition of cooking fresh is just as important now as it was in 1998 when they first opened.

“Everything is cooked fresh when you order it,” Donald said. “That's important to us. My mother started it and I took it over for her. We've been cooking since 1998. I took it over about five years ago.”

Growing up in the restaurant is something Donald is proud of, and continuing her mother's legacy through herself and her daughters is a point of pride for her. Though she said she does not plan on opening another location in West Point soon, expanding is definitely in her future.

“My daughters run one in Columbus,” Donald said with pride. “Right now, my goal is to probably expand a little bit.”

One thing Donald was clear on was her appreciation for all of the local regular customers who help keep the restaurant doing what they do best.

“We are very thankful for our customers and want them to know that,” said Donald.

In her free time, Donald said she enjoys her three children.

The Fish Shack is located at 451 West City Limits Road North, West Point, MS. To reach their West Point location, call (662) 304-0144, or for the Columbus location, call (662) 570-9755.
