Shields has St. Joe’s back in close victory over Drexel

Erin Shields wasn’t going to let her St. Joseph’s women’s basketball team lose Wednesday night. The Hawks, down by as many as eight points in the second half, was led back by Shields, the AllDelco out of Archbishop Carroll.

The game would come down to her last shot, and she drained a three- pointer at the buzzer to give visiting St. Joseph’s a 47- 45 victory over Drexel at Daskalakis Center.

Shields scored a team- high 18 points. In addition to her gamewinnin­g longball, she also scored the basket that gave the Hawks their first lead of the game with just 1: 09 left to play. The game came down to an in- bounds pass in which Natasha Cloud ( Cardinal O’Hara All- Delco) found Shields coming off a pick and her catchand- shot at the buzzer went in.

Drexel’s Hollie Marshon, a teammate of Shields’ at Carroll, led all scorers with 19 points, while teammate Taylor Wootton had 12. Cloud had nine points for St. Joseph’s.

Villanova 73, Lafayette 34

A defensive show by the Wildcats was key to this rout.

Villanova ( 2- 1) was led by Laura Sweeney, who had a game- high 17 points. Lauren Burford and Rachel Roberts added 11 points each as the ‘ Cats hit on 49 percent from the field, including a 10 of 20 show from three- point land.

Devon Kane ( Notre Dame AllDelco) scored 10 points with three rebounds and three assists. Megan Pearson ( Carroll All- Delco) added eight points with a couple of threes.

Emily Homan ( Delco Christian All- Delco) scored six points for Lafayette ( 1- 2).

Temple 54, Seton Hall 38

Victoria Macaulay scored a game- high 16 points and Rateska Brown had eight points as the Owls ( 2- 1) downed Seton Hall.

May Dayan added seven points for the Owls, while Brittany Morris scored 12 points for the Pirates ( 2- 1).
