McBride helps Haverford School repeat

-

The Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association has held its postseason boys soccer tournament for two years.

Gavin McBride made sure that defending champion Haverford School made it two straight championships. McBride’s shot from roughly 30 yards out snuck into the lower corner of the net to provide all the offense the Fords needed to knock off The Hill School for the second consecutive year, this time by a 1- 0 margin, Wednesday night at Cabrini College.

“We beat Hill in this last year, and it feels like maybe things are blossoming into a pretty big rivalr y with us and Hill,” Haverford coach Bill Brady said. “Winning the Inter- Ac title was big for us because none of our guys had won it, so I think they just went out and tried t o have some fun.”

As it turns out, championships are a lot of fun. The Rams sold out defensively to stop All- Delco striker Brett Campbell, but Brady said that those moves ended up creating space for the Fords’ midfielders. McBride, a Princeton lacrosse commit, was the beneficiary after Haverford had sustained pressure for a few minutes. While he wasn’t tested frequently, goalkeeper Jeff Green made all the right moves at the right time, stopping all five shots that came his way.

“It was one of our better games against a very good team,” Brady said. “I’m just really happy for them. I think that their character and commitment that they have to each other is probably how they were able to do this. Talent only takes you so far. A lot of is caring about each other, which was kind of what we preached all year.”
