Greater Overbrook String Band actively seeking new members

-

HAVERTOWN >> Greater Overbrook String Band, Delaware County’s only Mummers String Band, is actively seeking new members.

If you play the saxophone, banjo (or guitar), accordion or percussion, Greater Overbrook String Band invites you to join its members at American Legion Manoa Post 667, 1112 Steel Road, where they practice on Tuesday nights.

The organization is also recruiting nonplaying members. If you ever wanted to be a Mummer, this is your chance. Greater Overbrook will put new members in a beautiful Mummers costume and they will get to march in Philly’s traditional Mummers parade on New Year’s Day, as well as perform in other area parades and events.

Greater Overbrook practices every Tuesday night from 8-10. Every practice is “open house.” Anyone can walk in, observe, bring their instrument and try their hand at playing with the band. No appointment is needed, just knock on the door.

Radnor Elementary students help vets

RADNOR>> Fourth-graders at Radnor Elementary School raised more than $1,000 for veterans before leaving for summer vacation.

Teacher Camille Baker connected a unit on vocabulary, history, tradition and geography with an end-ofyear pancake celebration with parents in which students discussed what they learned and announced their charity of choice.

According to district Director of Communications Michael Petitti, the students raised money by performing extra household chores and decided to donate the money to Support Homeless Veterans (SHV), a Philadelphia nonprofit organization for veterans offering support, group housing, on-call clinical case management and peer support assistance.

In addition to the check, gift baskets of household items were presented to SHV founder and social worker Cara Colantuono, who informed students about the struggles of veterans returning from service and the history behind the organization.
