Leach declares Trump is ‘literally ... mentally ill’
PHILADELPHIA >> Among the delegates at the Democratic National Convention was state Sen. Daylin Leach, D-17, of King of Prussia, who did not mince words regarding Donald Trump.
“I think Hillary has to position herself frankly as someone who is sane because that’s a contrast. This is not an election against Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney. Those were different elections fought on issues. There’ll be issues in this election but there’s the threshold issue which is we have a candidate on the other side who literally is, I think, mentally ill,” Leach said.
Pointing to Trump’s tweets of “Hillary Rotten Clinton,” Leach said, “I stopped doing stuff like that in fourth grade, ok. And I was late. This is a grown man who calls U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren ‘Pochanatas’ and makes fun of people’s names and ethnicities and their handicapped status.”
The state senator said the issue of Trump’s viability needs to be addressed other issue.
“Before we even get to the issue of who has a better tax plan, we have to look at whether this person should have his hands on the nuclear button, whether this is someone our children should have to watch for the next eight years as the leader of our nation,” he said.
Leach said Clinton needed to provide a stark comparison.
“If Hillary positions herself as steady, thoughtful, intelligent, and prepared, I think that’s a huge contrast to the before any Republican nominee,” he said.
Of the task ahead of Clinton at the convention, Leach said, “I think she has to relate a little bit to the crowd in her speech tonight. It’s a hard thing to do in an arena like this. It’s a very big stake. She has to reveal a little bit of herself, to make her a little relatable because she’s been demonized for over 25 years.”
He said it’s not enough to do a laundry list of issues, that she had to connect to the people in the room.
