UTC Union reclaims title with stunning comeback

After dropping a pair of one-run decisions in the first two games in the Delco Christian Softball League championship series, the chance of a repeat did not look good for UTC Union.

All DVR needed was one win to end UTC Union’s reign as league champ. UTC, though, was not about to go quietly and did not.

UTC Union capped an incredible comeback with a 20-11 victory over DVR in Game 5 Thursday night to claim the league crown for the second year in a row. UTC scored eight runs in the first inning and put the game away with a six-round outburst with two outs in the fifth inning.

Andy Lockhart had three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the way for UTC. Chris Aaron was 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Jim Hooven added three hits and three runs scored.

Basketball

Nick Troilo scored 13 points to lead Benny’s Barber Shop to a 41-34 victory over Kistler Tiffany in the senior division of the West Laurel Hill/Springfield boys summer basketball league.

Kieran Morse of Kistler led all scorers with 19 points.

In other senior action: MIKE MCCREESH ESQ. 41, BELLA ROMA 27 >> Sean Donohue’s 11 points showed the way for the winners. Jason Cuffari had nine for Bella Roma.

In the intermediate division: CBL 29, CREATIVE FINANCE 17 >> Ed Kennedy paced CBL with 10 points. Brady Clark tossed in seven for Creative Finance.

Baseball

Michael Floirendo drilled a home run and a double in the top of the first inning as Ridley Area Little league continued its torrid play in the 9-10 state tournament with a 19-4 romp over Lehigh Little League.

The win moves RALL into Sunday’s championship round and within one victory of a berth in the East Regional tournament in Cranston, Rhode Island.

Ridley scored nine runs with two outs in the first inning to blow the game open. Jaxon Kehoe led the way with three hits and two RBIs. Irv Fisher added two hits and three runs scored. Larry Rose also had two hits for the winner, while Luke Shaak chipped in with a pair of RBIs for Ridley, which has scored 52 runs in three games.
