100 Years Ago – 1916:
For the nineteenth time of his young but spicy career, Winfield Collins stood before Police Magistrate Leary in city hall court and heard Chester Chief of Police Vance and Patrolman Harry Robinson relate to the court the many wild and woolly deeds he has pulled off in the past three years. The charge was vagrancy. The court adjudged the prisoner guilty and sentenced him to six months in the county jail. It was only a few years ago when Collins was looked upon and respected, as his reputation was above question. Suddenly he started to play with John Barleycorn and gradually by degrees Barleycorn won another victim.
75 Years Ago – 1941:
Chester School Board settled its tax delinquency charges against the Pennsylvania Military College by agreeing to the college’s offer of the use of the P.M.C. stadium for the football teams for five years. The situation revolved around delinquent taxes owed by P.M.C. amounting to approximately $12,000.
50 Years Ago – 1966:
About $500 in cash and $20,000 in cashier’s checks were discovered stolen from the offices of William Coopersmith at the B C Roller Dome, Sixth and Penn streets, Chester. Police said the thieves broke in the building from a fire escape on the Sixth Street side and pried open three inside doors. The roller rink is closed for the summer.
25 Years Ago – 1991:
A Chester man released from Delaware County Prison this week was shot in the back of the head and killed three days later around Second and Wilson streets, authorities said. The apparent execution-style slaying of the 27-year-old West Second Street resident came as a surprise to one lawman, who thought he was still behind bars, awaiting trial on at least three counts of possession with the intent to deliver cocaine.
10 Years Ago – 2006:
A Brookhaven man has been charged with reckless endangerment for allegedly firing an assault rifle in his girlfriend’s Cheyney Road home in Concord. The 29-year-old was staying with his girlfriend when he allegedly fired the rifle inside of her home last week. The following day, his girlfriend became alarmed when she saw him intoxicated, walking around the house with the loaded rifle, according to state police. He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail with the condition he stay away from the alleged victim.
