Man charged in connection with theft of bikes, $8G in equipment from Wounded Warriors
PHILADELPHIA >> A man was arrested following the search of a Sterling Street residence where police recovered four bicycles and $8,000 in equipment belonging to the Wounded Warrior Project – all of which were contained in a UHaul reported stolen from outside a Tinicum hotel, according to Philadelphia police.
Roy Bowman, 48, was charged with receiving stolen property. His preliminary arraignment information was not immediately available.
Tinicum police assisted the Philadelphia Major Crimes Unit with executing a search warrant Tuesday night at a property in the 4100 block of Sterling Street in Northeast Philadelphia, according to Tinicum Police Sgt. James Y. Simpkins Jr.
According to Simpkins, Tinicum police received information regarding the theft and its contents. Simpkins shared the information with Detective Jack Logan of Philadelphia Major Crimes, resulting in surveillance of the property and development of probable cause for the search warrant.
It was back on Aug. 13 that Tinicum police began investigating the theft of a U-Haul from the Renaissance Hotel, which contained three Trek rode bicycles, three Trek hybrid bicycles and three ICE recumbent bicycles, as well as equipment, valued at about $37,000.
Three days later, Tinicum police appealed to the public for information regarding the whereabouts of the U-Haul and its contents.
On Aug. 23, the Philadelphia Police Department Major Crimes Unit received a tip that the stolen bikes and parts that were inside the UHaul were inside a garage on Sterling Street, and the males who resides there drives a silver Chevy Trailblazer.
When investigators arrived in the area of the Sterling Street property, they watched as a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer pulled up to the rear and a dark Trek racing bike was removed from the vehicle and then taken inside the property, according to Philadelphia authorities.
When officers knocked on the front door, they saw a man later identified as Bowman jump up from the living room and run toward the rear of the property, but he stopped when he saw police had the place surrounded.
