100 Years Ago – 1916:

As a precaution against the spread of infantile paralysis, Dr. Samuel G. Dixon, State Commission of Health, has issued a sweeping order that all schools, public, private and parochial, in Pennsylvan­ia will remain closed until Sept. 18. The public schools in Chester were to have opened Sept. 11. Dispatches from Harrisburg indicate that Dixon’s order applies to college and preparator­y schools, although most of these do not start their fall term until after Sept. 18.

75 Years Ago – 1941:

50 Years Ago – 1966:

The Delaware County Vocational-Technical School Authority approved preliminar­y plans for vocation-technical high schools in Aston, Marple and Folcroft. The authority said the plans will be sent to the state for approval. The proposed Aston school is the smallest – 84,000 square feet – of the three. Head architect Edgar Miller said the building are designed to provide for future expansion, and that the Aston site probably would be first to be expanded.

25 Years Ago – 1991:

Motown Records founder Berry Gordy has filed a $100 million libel suit against the author of a Michael Jackson biography that alleged Gordy cheated artists out of profits. “Stuff is just made up out of the clear blue sky,” Gordy said of the book written by Randy Taraborell­i, a native of Ridley Township. “I have every confidence in my work,” Taraborell­i said.

10 Years Ago – 2006:

Leveraging his clout as “America’s Mayor,” a moniker earned for his grace under pressure on Sept. 11, 2001, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Republican­s’ steadfast support of the war on terror makes them the clear choice for voters. Giuliani stumped for U.S. Reps. Curt Weldon, R-7, and Jim Gerlach, R-6. “With (Weldon and Gerlach), you have leaders in Pennsylvan­ia that are realistic,” he said. “They understand what we are facing.”
