Mariner 2 pipeline project will be safe and create jobs

- Rick Welk, Aston, Member, IUOE Local 542

To the Times: I attended the Sept. 12 Middletown Township meeting when council voted affirmatively on the Mariner East 2 pipeline project. I’ll be at the Sept. 26 meeting as well, and encourage our local elected leaders to show the same level of support.

There has been much said about the project. This is what we know:

Mariner East 2 will be built with state-of-the-art technology to make it the safest pipeline among those running through our community. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, pipelines are the safest mode to transport energy resources — safer than trucks or rail.

Mariner East 2 will be built using local union labor. Sunoco Logistics, a company with deep roots in Delaware County, made that commitment. That means this project will be built by the most dependable, highly trained, highly skilled craftsman that exist. We have spent decades training, building and maintaining infrastructure

Mariner East 2 will provide local workers like me and brothers a living wage that will help to support our families and the local economy, and through the taxes it will generate, the project will help to finance countless community needs like schools, parks and roadways.

I’ll be there on Sept. 26 to support Mariner East 2 and hope Middletown Township Council will, too.
